Credit Cards, Should I?
    #6910839 - 05/13/07 06:59 PM (16 years, 8 months ago)

This is probably the last place to ask, but I know there are some wise people here. I am thinking about getting a credit card, but know very little about them. Can anyone refer me to a page that deals with basic information. I have no problem paying bills on time, I use my debit/bank card for just about everything anyway, but some credit cards I know minor discounts, or give you miles towards one thing or another. My parents use them for business and get free cruises with the amount they spend. So whats the catch? or is there not catch?

I think they can be useful to get little hand outs as you mentioned. I dont have a credit card yet because I cant decide which will give me the biggest pay back.

The catch is that if you don't pay on time, bills skyrocket.

You also need to develop good credit now to be able to take out laons for a car or house later. So if you will always pay it in full it will help you a lot. Otherwise it can screw you for life.

Yes, get a credit card. It helps build the credit score and it's very useful, as you know from your check/debit card.

Here's the skinny:
1) get a card with no annual fees. No exceptions.
2) get a card with decent rewards, if possible. Shit you'd use. I have a Fidelity 529 plan card and it goes straight to my baby's college fund.
3) pay the FULL amount every month. Not the minimum amount. The FULL amount. If you pay just the minimum, you get crazy debt. If you don't pay that, you get crazy debt and they slap you with fees and your credit gets screwed.

so basically no annual fees, and pay bills on time. Which I guess is about all I knew to begin with. Thanks for the information thus far, it is much appreciated, and I am starting to think about my credit score and future plans so to speak so if this helps build my credit score, great.

Don't just pay the bill on time, the trick to using a credit card is to pay in full like some of the other people said.  18% interest can get you in trouble really fast.  And make sure to read all the small print before you sign.  Some will give you a $500 limit but charge you $300 in processing fees!:plur:

Read the small print.

I just got an offer for a pre-approved credit card last week but on a closer look it was rip-off.

To begin with, once you call the number to accept the card they tac on $159 (processing fee(?)) right off the bat. They also were going to charge me like $50 a year for some kind of other charge.

Fuck that.

But, if you are trying to build or rebuild your credit, I can see that in some cases those ridiculous add on fees might be worth paying just so you can get some kind of credit history going---as a last resort.

Other than it it wasn't to bad; $1000 credit limit, interest rates were the norm,

Get one with a small limit. Max it out and pay it in full or pay it on time and pay it off. Do that a few times. Don't rack up debt. When you are in debt you are always working for the past that gets shitty. Only use the credit card for something useful. Build equity with what you buy with it hopefully something useful.
If you can't afford it don't buy it.It's like getting a mortgage with no money down or getting a car with out some cash down. Just doesn't make sense that if you can't save enough, how are you gonna scrape it together each month. Have enough cash saved up before you rack up a bill.

Thats why I don't have credit. Also because my work isn't steady, i like to run around to much. If i had credit debt I'd have to make some sacrifices, in my life style.

credit cards:

only spend what you have, or KNOW WITH 100% CERTAINTY you will have by the time your CC bill comes.

pay off the bill in full every month. sure, you won't build credit as quickly this way, but sudden harsh times and a looming debt balance on a CC is a terribly combination.

I think that the best way to establish credit is to go to a finance company. I bought a washer and dryer that way. Got my credit started. They are higher than a bank but not as dangerous as credit cards. And more likely to grant credit to someone w/o credit. At least there is a set time for paying it off and the interest isn't as high as a cc.

I thought maxing out hurts your credit?

Paying the minimum each month helps more than paying a card off. I was told by a financial advisor that having 200-500 dollars on a card is a good thing when you make the minimum payments. The best thing to do is save money up for what you want to buy, put it on your card and then pay for it over 3-5 months. Builds your credit quickly.

But then you'll end up paying more money than if you just paid for it up front. Why would you do that? "OK I have enough money to buy this £200 foozeball table but Im going to put it on my card to build credit and end up paying £270 for it". ??

It's easy to spend more than have with a credit card...
Do not get one.

Before you know it the companies have what they want.. YOU in their debt. That means they make a FORTUNE out of you in interest.
That's the catch. They will do anything and tempt you with numbers so you come under their control. I'd strongly advise against it.
STRONGLY.

If your minimum payment is 15 dollars on 500 dollars of credit you can pay it off in 3 payments without paying more. That builds your credit better than paying something off. Depending on the card. My Wells Fargo card only charges me monthly interest if I pay the minimum amount. One dollar more and no interest is added that month. They are big on annual interest so I have to watch my end of the year amount.

I know a lot of people think credit cards are evil, but I dont. You just have to know which card/cards to get with each company so that you will not end up paying an extreme amount of money more than you borrowed. Im only 21, I got my first credit card when I was 19 and my credit score (with only 3 credit cards) is over 700 and I just qualified for a 200,000 dollar loan for a house I am buying in TX.

If you arent dumb, credit card companies cant screw you over.
