Inoculation without syringe
    #6907631 -

So, I'm wondering if there' a way to inoculate some PF cakes without a syringe. Perhaps scraping some spore prints into an agar filled pitri dish? hmm.. i'm kinda lost.

thanks for all the help

You can, Thats the other way of inoc. you just have to be sterile about it.

hmm. so, if one is pretty sterile while scraping a spore print onto a sterile agar filled petri dish, and stored at the right temp., mycelium would begin to grow?

hmmm. could you then transfer a slice of the mycelium filled agar into a PF cake to incoulate it?

hmmmmm.

thanks again for the help!
just trying to get around having to buy a syringe online right now..

Indeed bro, just sterilize your knife your using to scrape and everything around you, and your golden bro! Good luck!

PS. spore prints are used just like syringes, syringes are just more convenient

Awesome. That's good to hear.

So, in your opinion, would a beginner (although one who has read up on mycology and cultivation quite a bit) be able to grow from a single genotype? by selecting the rizomorphic mycelium from an inoculated agar dish? and using that to inoculate plenty of rye seed jars? and case with vermiculite?

i think i'm ready

You don't scrape and you don't use a knife. A knife will destroy the spores by cutting them. Use an inoculating loop and after flame sterilizing, dip it into the agar to cool. Then gently touch it to the print, and then swipe the spores that stick to the loop on your agar.

You can drop a wedge of agar into a grain jar, but not a pf jar because the dry verm would block the path. You'll ideally want a laminar flow hood, but a glovebox will do if you're fast and careful.

i'm guessing stainless steel wire could be used to make an inoculating loop?

would rye seed not be a good choice of substrate?
what would be a better choice?
i plan on casing the substrate with vermiculite

thanks again for all the help!

Rye is supposed to be one of the best spawns, meaning that you dump the colonized rye berries into prepared horse shit. (sorry if I'm not answering your question I'm not totally sure what you're asking, or to what extent you know about growing). It's more bang for your time and buck.

so, dumping the colonized rye into pasteurized horse shit would be better than casing by using vermiculite?

by far think of it this way you're turning 4 parts into 12-16 parts of substrate
