I used to own almost every C&H book. In grade 5 I would stuff my backpack so full of them that when I got to school I would collapse on my back and be stuck like a turtle.
Calvin and Hobbes FTW!
I ended up giving them to one of my cousins so the respect of Bill Watterson can continue on.

hahaha ... C&H really IS that good ...
they now have an anniversary 25 lb box set (literally) of every C&H comic every produced, reproduced in higher-quality colors and contrasts than ever before ... it's a series of three books in a case ... I highly recommend picking it up ... that is, if you're strong enough

This one was one of my favorites when I was younger, if you do the voice for Space-Calfin it's hilarious. Me and one of my friends would always be saying "Grittings. Ma nam is Kahlfin! Hoffa gud tay askool!"

The two are not really comparable.
The Far Side is a single panel cartoon and is not constrained by having to feature recurring characters.
Calvi and Hobbes is a comic strip, and is built around a fixed set of characters.
In my humble opinion, each was the very best of their respective genres, and it is unfortunate indeed that we don't have an ongoing supply of them to appreciate. If there is any justice in the world, both Larson and Watterson are now wealthy men.
