A couple of IDs
    #6895816 - 05/09/07 10:48 PM (16 years, 10 months ago)

I was walking to my car from school today, when i noticed quite a few little groups of mushrooms..I thought I would see if anyone could help me ID a couple of them.

Species 1 -

Habitat: Found growing on a well fertilized lawn at a college
Gills: brown
Stem: about 9cm long, light brown
Cap: light and somewhat darker brown
Spore print: Dark brown, almost chocolate-colored
Bruising: cap bruises a darker brown
Location: Picked in Northeast Kansas

Species 2 -

Habitat: Found growing on a well fertilized lawn at a college
Gills: light tan, slightly yellow-colored
Stem: brownish yellow
Cap: light brown/yellow
Spore print: medium to dark brown, again almost chocolate-colored
Bruising: bruised darker yellow-brown
Location: Picked in Northeast Kansas

1 is Paneolina foenisecii.  An inactive, inedible, common mushroom.  There is an active look-a-like with a stouter, redder stem and a jet-black spore print.  Panaeolus subbalteatus inhabits similar habitats to Pan. foenisecii, as well as compost piles, dung heaps, and straw.  You should look for it.

I'm not too sure about your second mushroom.  Nothing particularly interesting though.

Great pictures and descriptions by the way.

I second that - nice descriptions and photos.

I agree on the first one, xmush. A *very* common lawn mushroom.

The other suggests one of the common lawn Agrocybe species to me. Unfortunately, it falls squarely into the middle of the category of LBMs. As such, an accurate ID is often impossible without a microscope, and sometimes even with one.

Happy mushrooming!

I agree with the first ID.

Agrocybe is a good idea for the second mushroom.
I was leaning more towards Tubaria based on the inverted umbo, which is common of Tubaria, but which I have yet to experience in any species of Agrocybe.

The base of the stipe sometimes shows bluing, though not often.  Spore print is black (not brown), and they taste like mushrooms.

I never get tired of seeing those in lawns, quite an example of a gorgeous mushroom if you ask me. Who said they are inedible? maybe deemed so because it's small and kinda bitter but i eat um. but i eat alot of wild plants just for fun. Why pick a living creature without some kind of use. I hate to just throw it down.

Other organisms will eat it if you do not.

I get sick if I eat too many raw mushrooms.
