Hey Cptn, What elevation do you start looking at for boletus (kings I'm guessing) this time of year. I'm a morel and chanterelle picker, but I'd like to hunt for B. edulis this year too. I've heard the Wallowas in June are a good place.

to tell you the truth, i havent really hunted boletes before, though i have had a total of 2 king boletes come across my way when i was hunting for muscaria. it seems they always grow on mossy hillsides, but what do i know...

i found two or 3 kinds of boletes on this walk through the forest,
though we must have covered a little over 4 miles of ground.

still cant seem to locate those morels though, where should i be looking?

im on the olympic penninsula btw.

Right now the morels are coming up in higher elevations. Finding naturals (opposed to burn morels, fire morels, landscaping morels, etc.) is difficult in the rain forest, especially older growth stands. What I suggest you do is look for Doug fir stands that have been thinned, burned, or both in the past two years. Black morels will pop up in the disturbed ground caused by the logging equipment and in burned areas in general. See if you can find these conditions above 3000ft elevation.

I am new to morel hunting, but I have always heard it's lower elevations before higher, but I could be wrong. I found about a pound of black morels in south Puget Sound yesterday, I'm not sure of the elevation difference between there and where you are. They were under some Douglas firs in an environment not that different from the one posted in your first pic, except perhaps a bit sparser. Just keep peeking around, they might just be a few days away.

I had gotten about 2 lbs of oysters and was perfectly happy but on the way to the car my gf stopped and yelped and my heart stopped, the morels were just right there, on pretty much open ground with very little debris. I also found tons of those amanitas as well, my first guess was pantherina since I don't know of any other brownish capped amanita with warts that grows in early spring, but I'm not 100% on that.

yeah i had some luck today with morels on your advice ranier, about the douglas fir environments.
me and my girlfriend went back to that location, and another location, and found 3 morels, 2 of which were slug eaten.

theres one of the sluggified ones

and then in gods spotlight, the forest gold!

and in very good condition!

douglas fir mulch all over the base!

we also saw hundreds of galerinas(my best guess) coming up...

lots of boletes

and those amanitas ruled the day, i got tired of taking pictures...

im not sure they are pantherinas, and i think theres a few lookalikes of pantherinas. pounds of em to be found right now though!
all the mushrooms around here seem to be at their maturest, like they all just completed a flush.

They do come up in lower elevations first. I found a decent amount along a river that was probably at the 300ft elevation three weeks ago. Right now, in northern Oregon, fresh black morels are coming up around the 3000ft elevation.

i only know this name cause i own and have read mushrooms demystified, but i have been identifying these amanitas as Amanita Velosa, which is a very close lookalike to pantherinas. scary, even though its a choice edible...
