Big gyms and other pics from a recent hunt - UPDATE! Bioluminescent fungi!
    #6896583 - 05/10/07 05:47 AM (16 years, 10 months ago)

After a good splash of rain recently and a almost painfully eager mind, I went for a look to see if there were any early signs of our good friends this year.

Alas, nothing active but there was a plethora of Gyms - if I wanted to, I could have easily gathered 30 kilos of gyms, but I'm hesitant to even try them as there is no noticeable blueing on any specimens.

Also found a little bracket fungus and some boletes which I'm keen to find out if they are edible - if anyone could shed some light it would be most appreciated!

Firstly, the gyms -

BIG gym -

And a gym pin explosion!

Number 1 - I found these specimens in the botanical gardens in the city where I live, and was wandering if anyone had an ID for them -

Number 2 - is this an Agaricus Bisporus? It was found in the same habitat as the gyms, a semi recently logged pine forest patch -

Number 3 - these are the boletes - I think they are the edible variety, but am not 100% sure - found also in pine forest -

Number 4 - And finally, this small bracket fungus, which sat on the porch for a day before I got a photo - unfortunately it degraded a lot overnight before I got the photo. It was found on a small branch in typical Australian bush scrub, and had snow white gills and an almost grey/black cap -

And a couple of psychedelic scenery shots -

Thanks in advance!

Those are some of the most amazing pics I've ever seen posted here.  Those gyms are wonderful and crazy.  Can't believe how big that one is.  Not sure what your mushroom number 1 is, looks rather oysterish though.  Number 2 is definitely an Agaricus, I find it difficult to ID them to species in many cases though.  DId it bruise at all?  Try scraping the stem with a knife and seeing if there is a color change over a 30 min. or so period.  It looks far too bug-eaten to be of any value now anyway.  Did your boletes change color at all?  Doesn't look like it.  Was the cap dry or slimy or sticky?

5 shrooms to you.  Great pics!

That mushroom is gigantic....

I agree, the first ones look very much like Pleurotus ostreatus. The Second is definitely an Agaricus, though I'm also hesitant to ID them to species from a photo alone.

If you are hoping to find out if any of these are edible, you should provide the necessary information for identification.

Nice photos.

Thanks for the kind words!

I should have elaborated more if I wanted a more thorough ID - I didn't keep any of them however and its take a week or two for me to get around to posting these pics, I was just curious for any future hunts.

The boletes were sliced down the middle to see if there was any distinct bruising and there wasnt, the cap was definitely quite slimy and hopefully from the pics you can see the colour of the pores - they were a distinct orange/yellow.

And thanks curecat as well - I knew you would pop in with an ID... your dedication is nothing short of amazing.

Are there any poisonous look alikes of the Oyster mushroom? As you can see from the photos, they have distinctly white gills, and are growing at the base of an Australian native tree in leaf debri.

The colour markings on the cap don't appear to be a common occurence in other photos I've found.

I can access this spot easily and will check back to see if there are still some there or if there are any more flushes occurring throughout the season and get some samples to confirm an ID.

EDIT: Could these be mistaken for Lentinellus ursinus quite easily?

Hey otto, was the cap on that last mushroom as furry as it looks? If the spores were white to cream coloured, it might be something like Lentinellus ursinus.

Wow we must have posted that at EXACTLY the same time....

The last pic - yes, did appear to have a furry cap. They were however only tiny specimens.

The mushrooms that i suggested were L. ursinus are the grey furry ones. It would be difficult to mistake an Oyster for that mushroom.

There are some poisonous Oyster look a likes, though the ones to watch out for have brown spores rather than white-cream spores, and the others taste putrid.

  wow, those are some hearty finds you found there. Real oyster's smell so delicious, its almost impossible to mistake anything for them.

That bolet kinda looks like a boletus betula.

Given the slimy caps, I think your boletes are probably a Suillus species of some sort. Any evidence of a ring on the stem?

And their occurrence in a pine forest, Suillus are of course mycorrhizal.
Did they have a fairly pungent odor, maybe reminiscent of pine and citrus?
Try peeling the separable slime layer from the cap... and take pictures of the process... without wearing gloves.  :hehehe:

Species # 3 is a Suillus due to its slimy top and large pore size. A couple boletes have slimy tops but they have different pores.

Gary Lincoff said in a talk that there were some oyster lookalikes in Japan which cause gastronomical upsets and have different color spores.

that big gym she is holding looks like a jack o' lantern, look at the gills going down the stem.it does appear to have a ring, though.

I dont recall a ring on the stem no, but there may well have been.

It says in a few links that they aren't good eating anyway, too slimy. Has anyone had any experience with eating boletes?

They did have a reasonably pungent odour yes, what should I look for when peeling the separable slime layer from the top? Any why shouldn't I wear gloves (perhaps I missed a joke..?).

Thanks for the input guys, I will definitely go back to where I found those Oysters and have a better look - it would be nice to eat my first edible find, though will obviously get some better pics, spore print and confirmation ID before doing so. Its been a few weeks since I spotted them, I hope they are still flushing.

Some boletes are choice edibles, but I don't think the genus Suillus has anything to tasty. Some people eat Suillus, but who wants to eat that slimy stuff. The gloves are reference to another post where someone had a slimy Suillus and had gloves on, gave us a laugh.

Good luck with the oysters.

Thanks xmush - I dont spend enough time on here these days to follow all the posts... :frown:

One more question - any idea on whether or not I should try doing anything with the mountain of gyms available at the moment? Worth giving them a try? I did taste a little piece of one and they really were awfully bitter. And some young specimens were kept overnight and deliberately bruised and battered at the base of the stem and on the gills, but there was no noticeable blueing at all.

I'll let you know how the Oyster hunting goes...

Otto - I personally wouldn't try anything that nasty unless i was sure they were active.  I'd wait until you find a collection which has some greening, then test them out if you're curious.  They are not very potent mushrooms, and it would be lame to eat a heap of them with no results.
