Well obviously it's more complex than all new = bad and all used = good. If you can afford something, then sure go ahead and do it. Personally I'd never get a brand new car unless I could purchase it outright (ie, not finance it). That was the main point of my previous reply. Financing a car is a huge waste of money.

Financing frees up liquid. Can get you in trouble, but it allows you to do more with your money.

I have never been super into cars, but I do appreciate good ones, in the past I just wanted something to get me around, and it wasn't an option, however, if it came down to getting a new one, I would invest some time and weigh into account all things, coolness factor, speed, MPG/ efficiency, etc.

Right now I got a choice between keeping my chrysler cirrus 96 or takin a cadillac deville 94.... what do you think, I can't really tell you what to get, but it sounds like people reccomened some cheaper ones they feel are "better" / more bang for the buck.

Talking about financing cars here, they're not an investment so spending extra cash on them (interest) is stupid.

Depends 110% on the car in question. Make, model, year, and the actual physical car itself. Was it taken care of? Do a carfax report on it before you buy it. Also take into consideration how much parts will be for it in case it does break. And above all, be willing to take good care of it yourself (regular maintenance, etc). Buddy of mine bought a used Corolla when it had 125k miles on it. He drove it up to 250k and then sold it to someone else 2-3 years ago and that guy is still driving it.

It just depends.

Not if you know you can make more from the money you free up than the cost of the interest.

We're talking about general advice to the average consumer. Most people don't realistically "free up" more money by financing a vehicle. Especially since people finance way beyond their means so they can be rolling on fat 20's in that new Escalade or whatever.

So I'm having a hard time deciding on what car to get. The choices are:

2008 Honda Element
22,000 + tax

2008 Mazda 3 Sport
18,500 + tax

2008 Mazda Speed 3
22,500 + tax

I'm looking to buy it, as leasing/financing is ridiculous for these cars. I like the look of the element and it would be handy in a lot of situations because of its room and cargo size, etc. The Mazdas are a difference of speed, as the sport is fun to drive but the speed is just plain fun, but comes at a higher price. I dunno what to do.

Why not a 350z? Very reliable sports cars, used @ 18,00-22,000, v6 that gets 18/24 to the gal. Not bad.

If you get a 2003 make sure it's had that years rear wheel problem fixed, it was a recall.

However, they don't have much room in them...
