Blewits

Found these today in a newly discovered patch at my "farm". Hopefully they do well in the near future. In my zeal took a few that were obviously too small. The midwest has been receiving tremendous amounts of rain, I suspect a good season will follow.

This picture isn’t an accurate color representation however I liked the way it turned out so it is included despite being redundant.

I've never seen them before fall, this is the second post on here about blewits found in the spring. Still, very cool.
Have you found them in the spring before this batch? In the summer?

I usually find them in greater abundance in autumn however if conditions are right they can present themselves with these vernal appearances… typical unpredictability displayed by many of the tasty little sabprobic organisms.

Neither did I. Would be cool, if they could be cultivated indoors over the winter and fruited outside in the spring.

I will look for them, though the birds tend to tear up the kind of habitat they like in the spring looking for grub.

I've been trying to get a little cardboard spawn going from stem butts collected about a month ago however it hasn't been working out all that well. So i'm trying again with these.

Keep the carboard cool if you can, less than 60 F if you can and in a plastic bag with some holes poked in it or something similar. The mycelium on cardboard withstands even freezing. Don't let the cardboard get dry, with blewits the carboard gets moldy if it drys too much. It would probably work in the refridgerater.

Interesting, makes perfect sense. Thanks for the info!!! I wonder how it would do on agar. I generally don't enjoy agar work too much however I've been considering making up a batch of plates for several little projects. Think it would be worth working with spores of this species?

Yes, blewit spores are worth playing with. The mycelium is lilac and is slow to get going, but grows fast once it starts growing, it is often aerial, so it can look like a contaminate.

I have a few spores from the ones I found the other day. I need to try and get those going. I want Blewits in my yard...
going back tomorrow to check on the fruits that were missed by the lawnmowers on Saturday. I was so pissed that they mowed those beautiful purple mushrooms, but at least there were short ones that they didn't destroy.
Any idea how quickly they get large? I saw some quarter sized ones on Saturday evening. Think they'll be fully matured by tomorrow afternoon?
