The finer points of hosting a tor server...

My hijinx regarding puppetry on a forum where I got an illogical and ill-deserved IP ban really sparked my interest in tor, and now that I know how to use the service, I'd like to contribute by running a small server.
I've got ports forwarded, my IP identified, and other such newbie stuff... but I really don't know anything at all about networking and I was wondering if someone could give me an idiot's guide to running a tor server.
It's really fun to open up that network map and see those lines stretching between those dots... but there are so many dots and oh so few lines, I feel like I haven't set it up right and that I'm not really helping very much.
The documentation for Tor is hard to understand for someone who doesn't know how networks operate, and I'm one of those people... so when I try to read up on what to do I feel like I'm following a recipie instead of learning a skill.

if you're an exit node, you'll find yourself on the default ban list for some (many?) irc servers, including our own. sucks, but a lot of people use TOR to abuse and harass others.

There's a user friendly interface to configure your machine as a tor server. On the onion icon in your sys tray, right click and select "configure." Then select the server tab. I configure it as a "middle man", so only other tor servers learn your IP and can connect to you. You can also set bandwidth restrictions by rate, and time of day.
Vidalia has a good help section that explains what every thing does. Do a little reading you'll probably find it kinda interesting. GL!
