Signs that the End is Near

An eight-month old rooster stands on some grass May 22, 2002 at the Hebrew University in Rehovot. Israeli scientists at the Agriculture department of the university have genetically engineered bare-skinned chickens as part of a research project to develop succulent, low fat poultry that is environmentally friendly. The naked chicken, as the bird has been dubbed, would also save poultry farmers large amounts of money on ventilation to prevent their chickens from overheating. REUTERS/Havakuk Levison

Umm I think KFC is working on that... they already have beakless, feetless chickens I believe.

Well all I know is that they had to switch their name to KFC because they weren't allowed to call it Kentucky Fried Chicken anymore, because technically it wasnt chicken. Genetically engineered chicken.

i have a friend who was a kfc manager, she said they changed to kfc to avoid the negative connotations that come with 'fried'...ie fried food=unhealthy. actually, in some ways, featherless chickens is a great idea, it will reduce the number of parasites and diseases that traditionally fester in the crowded conditions these birds are reared in, but i guess it will result in a host of new problems. its a sad reflection on we humans that we turn such a beautiful bird into a freak.

a beautiful bird?
chickens didn't exist in nature before humans. like domesticated dogs, cats and cows, they are creations of man. they are already freaks of nature. So now we are altering them even more...
I agree that they look absolutely disgusting but how does this foretell the end of the world? maybe we're destined to eat naked birds in the future.
I don't think that the "End is Near" for humans. however I do think that this is the end of natural evolution as we know it.

chickens were a malaysian forest dwelling bird. i guess you have never kept free-range chickens, they have a well developed social code (where do you think the term 'pecking order' comes from) and a healthy rooster is one of nature's finest examples of virility and flamboyance. i think cockroaches are beautiful too...eye of the beholder i guess.

I saw a short interview with the guy who bread those chickens and he said that they weren't genetically modified, they were just bread that way. Thats all I know.

What I read is that it was a random mutation and they thought it would be a good idea to breed the mutant bird for these characteristics.

do these birds still exist? if they do, I was only referring to the modern chicken that is bred for meat, not the natural bird. the modern chicken that we eat is nothing like what nature intended. just like cows or sheep, they would not survive in nature. their bodies have been bred to produce meat (you rarely find fat animals in nature) and their instincts have been suppressed by generations of "genetic engineering" They are completely dependent on human beings for their survival.
and no I never kept freee-range chickens

Kewl, I knew these chicken sweaters I bought back in the '70s would come in handy someday. Now where did I put them? Damn, I wish I hadn't taken all those drugs!

i take it you are referring to battery hens and its true they do not know how to scratch for worms, insects and seeds, so would die if left to their own devices. free range hens are quite independent and are more than happy to do their thing without any human help. i worked on a farm where we took a batch of rejects from a chicken battery, all of them were too sick or old to lay eggs and too scrawny and grotty to eat. they were pretty spun out at first and had to be hand fed, after about 2 weeks they learnt how to scratch by copying the free range dudes (or it may have been telepathy - the universal language ....where did i read that? ). btw - we didnt keep chooks for their meat, we used them for clearing ground before planting, they will seek out and eat every weed seed and convert it into a-grade fertiliser, also they do a fine job of loosening up the soil - for free! with no effort from us. also, once plants are established the chooks are allowed in to pick off all the bugs and shit some more goodness, fuck pesticides.

You rambled on about the chicken, but couldn't even make your point as to how that portends the end.
(Yes folks, I am using that dirty skeptic tool called "causality". In the believer's world, one can just string any two unrelated incidents together to make up a story.)
