I should have mentioned this in my tick information posting last week, but removal of ticks should be done with tweezers. If no tweezers are available, use your fingers. Pretty much everything else you hear about removing ticks is an old wives tale. Tweezers or fingers as close to the head as possible, and pull them straight out. You won't leave the head in there. Using a cigarette or match will only cause the tick to bite down harder, and you'll end up burning yourself.

Very uninformed post. Who has head of burning ticks with a cigarette of match, that's a ludicrous idea_lol/ Ticks WILL let go when burned and also can break their head off inside of your skin if you do it wrong. Having ticks on you is common, but they don't bite right away they will crawl( without you feeling it to a nice spot and sink their teeth in)
Trust me I grew up in the Florida Pan handle woods, I've had hundreds of ticks. The secret to ticks is to check RIGHT after you get out of the woods.
And change clothes( wash them right away)
Ticks go right for the warm areas, and they won't ever bite into your leg or arm, so check the nooks and crannies good.

I've burned plenty of tics off me. The way to do it is heat up a paper clip and burn the HEAD not the body... which means you have to have PINPOINT accuracy, which is easy. A coat hanger is a bit wide, but a CIGARETTE is just stupid, lol. A red hot paper clip or needle is the way to go... Afterwords, sterilize the wound with antiseptic, and dot it with neosporin.
Most often, ticks won't bite and suck until you sit still, the rest of the time they are on the move to your warm areas( head, crotch, shoes).
Good luck and good pictures. I am a big fan of morel hunting.

This is the old wives tale I'm speaking of, I recommended tweezers.

Quote:

Ticks WILL let go when burned

But only after they bite and put even more of their saliva into the wound

Quote:

and also can break their head off inside of your skin if you do it wrong.

This is pretty uncommon, especially if you do it right by using tweezers or your fingernails. I should also mention to put the tweezers as close to your skin as possible. You don't want to squeeze the tick's body and have it spew even more saliva or digesta into the bite site.

Quote:

Ticks go right for the warm areas, and they won't ever bite into your leg or arm, so check the nooks and crannies good.

Checking nooks and crannies is good, but you are absolutely wrong to say they won't ever bite into your leg or arm. Very uninformed.

This is absolutely the most retarded and unnecessarily difficult method of removing ticks that there is.

I don't know where you heard this, but they don't wait until you stop moving. Their objective is to bite you as soon as they find a suitable spot.

Like I said, tweezers or fingers (with nails if you've got 'em). Burning them (via cigarette or whatever else you want to use) is not a medically advisable way to do it. And to quash any argument, and without giving too much away about myself, I have removed thousands of ticks from my patients over the years, and treated dozens of cases of tick related illness. Just thought I'd throw that up against your credentials of 'growing up in the Florida panhandle.'

Safe and happy hunting to everyone!

I usually use a needle to get under the head and pick them out.somebody said if you put vaseline on them they'll back out ,but I dont know.it's all part of the woods thing.

Vaseline does not work. Along those same lines, neither does nail polish, nail polish remover, gasoline, motor oil, tar, turpentine, paint thinner etc. (and those are all things that I've heard touted)

But coon, let's get back to your morels. You're having a killer season! Those pictures are droolworthy.

If your not picking ticks off yourself your not finding morels. Some of my best morel spots the tick are just unbelievable. The tick in the photo looks like a wood tick and I just pull them off with my fingers. The deer tick I use tweezers. I have had hundreds of both in my skin and get tested ever year with no problems, but it only takes one. I'm thinking of using some of the spray treatments but I'm a organic person. Happy Hunting

Nice find man the ticks are really bad this year in my area.

I went out and picked a nice sack full last night.

I found 5 or 6 ticks on me while I was strolling through the woods. When I was finished they kept crawling up my neck, back and stomach so I pelled my shirt off to find nearly a dozen inside of my shirt. Over all I bet I picked 35-40 ticks of myself and my clothes after an hour in the forest.
