Hey was just wondering if someone would be able to ID this, would be much apreciated





Habitat: Bushland near a creek
Gills: golden brown
Stem: golden brown
Cap: Brown, golden brown 4cm - 5cm (1.5 - 2inch)
Spore print color: Brow
Location: Picked in NSW, Australia

That is a beautiful yellow Cortinarius you have there.

It sure looks a lot like a man on horseback, but those have white spores.

Did you actually do a spore print, or is that a guess based on the gill color? Does it have a distinctive odor? My first thought on seeing it is the same as AR's - it looks like a Tricholoma. Tricholomas have white spore prints.

wickedferret, man on horseback is a common name for Tricholoma flavovirens, an excellent edible. The negative side of that species is that there are several lookalikes, some of which are poisonous.

OK, the next question is what kind of brown. Unfortunately, "brown" describes so many really different colors that it's less useful than most color terms for mycology. Could you describe it in terms of something else that's common enough that most of us will have seen it? An example would be brown like cinnamon.

Also, does it have a distinctive odor?
