*sigh*  Don't we all?  I think that losing my ability to make excuses, whether to myself or to others, would be a giant leap forward in my personal development.

The Hindu religion believes humans should be vegetarism and that animals are lower on the evolutionary chain dealing with progression of the soul from one body to another through reincartion. Vegetarian humans are some of the highest on the scales. It includes hundreds of planets and many are spiritual/immortal planes of existence. Earth isn't all that grand on the whole scale i believe. They claim karmic reaction to killing animals, and slight karmic reaction to taking plant life. This goes for humans, animals, all life ect. which supposedyl all contains a soul but has to learn to listen to and recognize the words of the almighty through hearing them from a teacher. I've heard christian pastors preach the gospel of matthew which says "some day the lion will lie down with teh lamb" which means that once humans are enlightened realize that "god is love" and love one another as they love themselves, love god, and life, that this force will be so huge it will transform the world and animal world as well. It's an interesting theory. Despite all the carnivores out there, there isn't really taht much killing going on, most of the time, even in the wilds of africa, animals are doing some other activity and most animals are actually vegetarian. An indian book said that god is so great he gives the lion a body to eat meat because that is what he wants however god also punishes the lion because it only eats once a week, vegetarians are blessed because their food has less karma associated with it so they can eat several times a day. Some books also say that only the ego dies and the soul is immortal and this must be seen first hand, kind of like how upon waking up a dream no longer matters. These are all matters of faith. Also you can take nuts, fruit, grains, seeds ect from a plant without killing it but can not take parts of an animal without killing it, to comment on an earlier post. If we all must be judged upon our death and religion is right, everyone will have to pay for their sins, if don juan is right and eagles consumes all awareness i guess that's another story i think he still believed something survived death, not making it that big of a deal. the whole "food chain" idea is odd anyway since elephants are vegetarian, without weapons a bear, lion would easily kill us. By that standard, a human who kills other humans as well as animals would rule the world ect. Most people look at the world through another scope be it religous or native american, The massive amount of killing on our planet by humans and animals always bothered me too, Maybe on other plantets there is life and killing doesn't exist there. The universe if a big place, God made a mistake isn't necessarily the only explanation. There's some expression, you are what you eat. Go to the library, or buy books offline bhaktivedanta swami prabhupada writes many books on the subject, coming from ancient indian sacred texts.

Actually, administrative officials have placed such a demand on the item that millions of Chinese people are conceiving in order to produce more factories to have more to fill that demand. Our warehouses aren't being replenished anywhere quick enough.

They claim karmic reaction to killing animals

Is there a karmic reaction to eating meat grown by cloning in a petri dish where no animal is harmed?

All in all it's about appreciation of the necessities
Again, as was said, the spiritual setting of one's mind and the resulting means are the judgmental factors, not the fact of a food chain itself.
One may eat meat in accordance with nature and the spirit, if one can appreciate nature and spirit for that great gift and appreciate the animal for giving its life (even if we 'have to' take it), and doing good for them in return.
