This thread is old as shit.
I saw them live when they opened for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and it really turned me off to them. I used to like them (specifically De-Loused, I'm not too fond of their other albums) but the live show was pretty terrible in my opinion. I still listen to De-Loused sometimes, but not as much as I used to.

Without Jon Theodore, I seriously doubt the Volta's ability to seriously kick as much ass as they once did.
I hope they prove me wrong. Just watch the video of Cygnus that TrippinNinjaBuddha posted with whoever that other clown is on drums. Pretty sad if you ask me. Sure, he's pretty groovy, but the raw power and unshakable feel of Theodore is just not there.

Word. I wonder if we'll ever get a better idea of why they broke it off?

they said he was lazy, but who knows. it was all downhill after de loused anyway, when jeremy ward died they lost the magic, they also gave up drugs apparently after de loused and it seems pretty obvious... we'll see what their next album has to offer.

Explain how it became obvious...

it was obvious to myself when their music was nowhere near what it once was, de-loused was a great album, but after that it's just not the same, IMO

I'm sorry you think that way.
I think Amputechture is their best work.
Have you heard Rodriguez's solo albums?

Yeah, Deloused was awesome, hard to top. But Amputechture is their most ambitious and impressive. Maybe you just didn't give it enough listens. There's some dense shit on that album. Listen to Tetragrammaton or Meccamputechture or Day of the Baphomets a few more times and tell me it doesn't blow your fucking socks off.
And who said Theodore was lazy? If you ask me Jon Theodore is the Mars Volta, just as much as Cedric and Omar. I wouldn't be surprised if Theodore got fed up with them doing shit like writing in the liner notes of Amputechture, "The Mars VOlta is Omar Rodriguez Lopez and Cedric Blixler Zavala. The band that plays the music on this album is Omar blahblah, Cedricblahbla, Jon Theodore, etc" What kind of shit is that anyway? Ok, we get it, Omar and Cedric spawned the band, but you don't have have to trumpet this fact in a way that, if you ask me, is insulting to the rest of the group.
If they did anything to alienate Theodore, they blew it.

from what i read they stated he wasn't showing up for practices, though i'll have to go find the source, i believe it is also on tmv forum.
i'm not saying their new music is terrible, but i have yet to see any tmv that surpasses the lowlands 2003 show, none that i can connect with like that. of course everyone will have their own opinion on them though.
i feel the same way about system of a down, their first album was amazing, after that it just wasn't same, again, IMO. i guess everyone has their own musical preferences though.

I concur with the the statements about both System of a Down and The Mars Volta.
