Cold Shocking Idea
    #686454 - 06/18/02 03:11 PM (21 years, 9 months ago)

My closet is between 80-85F. I just put my casing into my terrarium to induce pinning. Would ice cube trays full of ice in my terrarium help pinning or would the risk of contams outweigh the benefits?

Yes, it will help. Maybe a better idea would be to get some of those blue gel ice paks. No real risk of contams either way.

I don't want to bitch or anything, but why all this business with cold shocking in the first place? P. cubensis fruits very readily without any cold shocking. Its a perpetual myth that cold shocking is necessary in cubensis. It is necessary in cyanscens, but thats another story entirely. The real trick would be to keep them from fruiting if you wanted to for some reason.

I agree dirk.

He did say that his temps are 80-85. Its been scientifically proven that cubensis pin and grow faster at lower temps. though...

My advice was more toward him maintaing lower temps not just shocking them.

80 is the highest I'll ever go, and thats only during incubation. Normally I sit at a good 75. Never had a problem with pinning, never have seen a difference between cold shocked and not shocked though.

High temps will produce fruits..they're just going to be smaller in size. i've had success in those heat parameters but growth was always slightly stunted. personally, i wouldn't mess with cold packs, too much work and too much temp. variations. not that that might do any damage, i just wouldn't mess with it. cold-shocking from my experience has no affect on fruiting capabilities, it works to signal the mycelium that it is time to fruit. the cakes/casings will flush again within three days after shocking while it might take more than a week normally.
