"De La Hoya-Mayweather will separate boxing from thuggish UFC
This is what the Oscar De La Hoya-Floyd Mayweather fight, one of the most important events in recent sports history, really means: It's boxing's last stand.
Boxing is fighting for its life, and in some ways the largest obstacle to its rebirth is its greatest competitor -- the worst league ever invented, the UFC. Which means it is good vs. evil, Halle Berry vs. Courtney Love, true sport against the mosh pit of sweat and bloodied skull fractures known as ultimate fighting.
De La Hoya and Mayweather can single-handedly save their sport from deteriorating into dust while simultaneously stopping the advance of the UFC barbarians at the gate, trying to destroy boxing by polluting pay-per-view with their brand of low-brow, ghetto-fabulous hooliganism.
This is it. This is when boxing emerges from its great depression riding the shoulders of De La Hoya and finally strikes a blow to the caged ignorance that is mixed martial arts.
It will happen."
Face it, your sport is being replaced by stronger, more versatile competitors and more exciting events. GET OVER IT.
Mayweather thinks he can beat Sean Sherk? Toney thinks he can beat Chuck Liddell? Give me a break guys.

I used to think UFC would be a flash in the pan and was lame, but then I actually watched a couple fights, and I dig it. I wouldn't say I like it more or less than boxing, but it's tight, I wish I watched more. Both get me wanting to learn to fight (actual styles, not just street fight)

Watching the UFC eventually lead me into training, which is at the moment probably the thing I enjoy most in my life right now.
It's just really funny how much the shit talking has picked up in recent years (Especially since the highest combat sport PPV gross last year was a UFC event not Boxing).
I like boxing, but boxers really need to keep their mouths closed about stuff like that. All you have to do is look at the old UFC's to see what happens when a pure boxer gets in the cage, and that's BEFORE everyone was as well rounded as they are today.

I'm a boxing fan.
I'm not an MMA fan.
I'm not going to say one is better than the other, though.
They're two totally different things. Apples and Oranges.
It is, however, stupid to say "Boxing sucks because De La Hoya would get knocked out by Liddell."
So? Thats like saying A-Rod could never guard Shaq. Or that Tom Brady wouldn't last a minute on the soccer field with Beckham. Completely irrelevant.
You cant even say "MMA is pure fighting". I've seen the list of rules. Its longer than my term paper. There are a jillion things you cant do, or that are illegal. Its not even close to the "No Holds Barred" mentality they promote. There are plenty of barred holds.
Like I said, I'm a boxing fan. To me, personally, I'd just rather watch guys move around and stick and jab and beat the shit out of each other than two guys lay on top of each other for five minutes. I know how that sounds, and I'm not saying "OMG! IT IS GAY" I just dont find it exciting.
I'm sure if I knew the intricacies of it, and which holds people were trying, or whatever, I'd enjoy it more. But it honestly just looks like two guys lying on the ground hugging each other. I'd watch it if the ref stood the fighters up every time it hit the ground. I'd watch that.
But to me, boxing is 10X more exciting than any MMA I've ever seen.
I'm not knocking your sport, understand. I'm not opposed to the UFC or MMA. I just dont like it.
I forgot to add, I'm pretty sure this De La Hoya - Mayweather fight is going to be the biggest gate in history, as well as the biggest pay-per-view card in history. So obviously, there are still some boxing fans out there.
You have to understand that boxing is incredibly fragmented. The worst its ever been. How many people would watch baseball if there was no MLB, just a bunch of teams that played whenever they could agree on a contract, no world series, no playoffs, and 8 world champions? Nobody.
I honestly believe that if boxing was promoted right, it would be the biggest sport in America, just like it was. UFC has a great business plan, and if boxing was to implement something like it, I think it would see an incredible resurgence.

Agreed on all counts.. (other than liking boxing better than mma.. i like both about equal.) Especially the fact that boxing needs to be better organized. It's all over the place.

This was my main point here, not MMA is better than Boxing or what have you. It's the boxers that are talking shit saying that they could knock out all the MMA fighters and they just couldn't cut it in boxing etc.
The MMA fighters are saying prove it, Dana White is even offering several million for Mayweather to fight the lightweight champion Sean Sherk. All the shit talking seems to be being done on boxing's side and I just think it's funny because they're specialized athletes and would be completely out of their element in a real fight.
I like boxing as a sport, and then again I also like Brazilian Ju-Jitsu as a sport. I can watch a hour long BJJ match and be amazed by the whole thing, because I understand the aspects to the ground game and realize it's much harder to train then throwing punches all day long.
That's why I have so much respect for the guys that can do it all extremely effectively. I train with guys who are in their early 20s who could submit any boxer or knock out any wrestler, so it's the guys who can do it all that interest me the most.

Well said
I laughed outloud hearing those boxers talking that shit. Sure made me shake my head.
I didn't hear about dana white actually putting the money where there mouth is though. Did he seriously propose an actual fight between mayweather and sherk?
Never in a million years will you see mayweather actually step up to that plate

Have you guys heard all the shit Mayweather has been talking about EVERYONE?
That's his schtick. I wouldn't get all butt-hurt about it.

True, that's just Mayweather for you I guess.
What I find even funnier than Mayweather is James Toney (It's James right?) I mean at least Mayweather is undefeated and a champion, Toney can't even handle competitors in his own sport, and he thinks he can beat Chuck Liddell
