What is your favorite san pedro soil mix?
    #6865161 - 05/03/07 12:00 AM (14 years, 5 months ago)

Like the title says, ive got a few cuttings im about to grow out and want to try something different than what i normally use.

5 parts Shultz cactus mix
1 part 1/4" grade limestone
1 tablespoon powdered dolomite/dolostone

then during growth, i fertilize once every month with half strength peter's all purpose fertilizer, but it gets hot here in texas so i am watering like every 3 days, and that lets it stay completely dry for one. This seems to work really well for me. so what do you guys do?

peace

if you dont want to get in to good organic mixing of cactus soil then just go with store bought

you have to make sure it is true organic humus because most bags of "humus" are for EX red wood chips that are composted which Rob's nitrogen and is technically mulch.also there is a bunch of bags that are manure and humus/ <- this is even worse

my mix

organic humus 55- 60%
worm castings 5%
perlite 30%
soft rock phosphate 1-2% ( slow release Phosphorus and minerals )
green sand 1-2% (Potassium)
fish meal or i sometimes use a fish/kelp meal mix. 1-2% (nitrogen)
sometimes i also use coarse sand if used i just cut down on some perlite and add this in its place. NOT PLAY SAND
\
Rock powders are a slow release source of minerals that can last for years, it is much better then adding chemicals..

good luck

I just do a simple perlite/potting soil mix for mine. I did about 1/5 perlite and 4/5 potting soil, mixed with a little vermiculite. Seems to be doing fine.

yeah, thats my deal royer, i prolly need around 50 this time, and the cactus mix comes in small bags, it would cost a fortune to use it for the amount i need.

i use the limestone and dolostone for the minerals...they love it, plus i get it for free from this local construction company...

peace
