Pick only one.
    #6864252 - 05/02/07 06:43 PM (16 years, 11 months ago)

So, how is this thread different than all the other "give me some band reccomendation" threads?
well, first off, it is albums only. Here are some other rules.

1) please only post one album reccomendation. it is ok to post "yeah, that album totally rocks my face off" as a reply to someone elses reccomendation.
2) please make the album choice something that most people wouldnt know about. Like Dark Side of the Moon isnt obscure, dont waste your one reccomendation on it... everyone knows about it. It can be from a band very few people know about, or it can be from a known band but one of their lesser known albums.
3) please dont derail into "dood that album totally sucks ass".... unless it is a nickelback album or Vitalogy.
4) give a little paragraph, maybe the history of the album, what it sounds like... etc.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

ok, so mine is Cabaret Manana by Esquivel. Oddly enough, it is in the genre "Space Age Bachelor Pad" music..... didnt even know that was a genre. but if you remember the soundtrack from the movie "Four Rooms" many of his songs were on there. It has the feel of theme songs from the late 50's and early 60's with a little latin tinge to it. Kind of like the "I dream of Jeannie".
It is great to trip to, because you wouldnt expect it.

so there is my one reccomendation. See, I want people to give their utter best reccomendation on this one, and hopefully that will happen since you can only reccomend one album period. So bring your A games bitches.

Well, as I'm sure you know, this is rather hard. At the very moment I'm really diggin' McCoy Tyner's Echo of a Friend

For those of you who don't know, Tyner was a piano player who recorded a lot of stuff with John Coltrane, including the amazing A Love Supreme. Echo of a Friend is a solo Tyner album made shorty after Coltrane died, and it's all Coltrane pieces (hence the title.) Tyner is probably my favorite jazz piano player, and I really like this album, especially Naima, the first track, I like that song a lot in general.

I'm sure not many people will ever give it a listen, I know jazz isn't too popular on these boards (or amongst my "peers".)

I made this thread mainly for me. As they are posted, I am checking them out on Rhapsody and having them ready to play between sets.
So, know that atleast one person will listen to it.

People see "psilocyberin" and stay away. They assume you're just going to bash anything they throw in here. That's my assumption at least.

I'm gonna check out that album you posted tomorrow.

I dont bash music reccomendations (except nickelback and Vitalogy).

I was thinking it was the title. Like maybe people thought it was a band name.

Spirit of the Forest by Baka Beyond

The sound is amazing these guys produce.  Great mix of stylistic playing that meld together so well.  These musicians recorded most of this album with a baka tribe in the African rain forest.  Its very ethnic sounding (in instruments and percussion)  but its melodies carry its feelings over very well. (for a western ear)  Its an album (and band) that seems to get a rare feeling across in their music.  Its has a very optimistic, happy feel to the music.  Very life filled and organic.  Its something you can through on when your feeling kind of down, and before you know it, your thought pattern slowly turns in a positive direction.  Highly recommended.

I wouldn't call that Jack White's band - it's as much Brendan Benson's brainchild as it is Mr. White's.

I'm a big fan of Menomena right now. Their latest album Friend and Foe is quite good.

yeah, but who the fuck is Brendan Benson?
(thats a rhetorical question. i know who he is. i just mean hes pretty unknown)
people know who jack white is. and it IS his band...
just as its Patrick Keeler and Jack Lawrence's band.
but i wouldn't cite them right away cause who the fuck are they?

well, FYI, I have all the reccomendations so far on a playlist that I am listening to right now. I am halfway through Jewunits reccomendation. I like it so far. It fits the mood of the day, kind of relaxed and overcast outside.

one thing I noticed about Tyners playing and chord structure (atleast so far) is that it reminded me of the piano in Carol Kings albums. even the tone sounds identical.
Of course it eventually goes into avant gard, bop-esque jazz that reminds me of thelonius monks straight finger "chord dropping".

Spiral Architect - A Sceptics Universe. Released 1998.
Sort of a fusion of Technical Progerssive Metal(with actual singing) and Jazz sorta stuff. Completely mental and twisted.

Spiral Architect is about continual development, idealism, and intensity. Spiral Architect is controlled anarchy. The aim is to make music that challenges the listener, as well as pushes the abilities of the musicians and man.

The constellation:
Øyvind Hægeland — Vocals
Steinar Gundersen — Lead Guitar
Andreas Jonsson — Guitar
Lars K. Norberg — Bass
Asgeir Mickelson — Drums

Spiral Architect was founded in 1993 in Oslo, Norway, when lead guitarist Steinar Gundersen (ex-King's Quest) joined the remains of Anesthesia consisting of Kaj Gornitzka (guitar), Lars K. Norberg (bass) and Asgeir Mickelson (drums). From the onset, the band set out to branch off from the music of contemporary innovative metal bands like WatchTower, Fates Warning and Psychotic Waltz. The overall idea was to once and for all integrate jazz-fusion elements with uncompromizing metal. In other words, to explore technical metal.

Lumping Nickelback in with Vitalogy... you should be fucking banned. I'll ignore your trolling on that one and give you my recommendation.

The Tragically Hip is very well known in Canada, but not so much in the states. Due to their Canada-centric fanship, there is a fierce patriotic connection among the fans. Day for night is their 4th full-length album and in my opinion it is their best. Even Hip fans seem to overlook it, in my experience.

For those of you who are unfamiliar, the Hip's music is pretty much just straight-ahead rock and roll; it's the vivid lyrics of frontman Gord Downie that make these humble songs spectacular.

People tend to either love or hate the Hip. There aren't many fence-sitters.

Standout tracks:

-Thugs
-So Hard Done By
-Titanic Terrarium

Deliverance is the fifth album by Corrosion of Conformity, and the first on which Pepper Keenan was lead singer. By this album, the band had completely shed their punk and thrash influences, instead opting for Sabbath-inspired metal. "Clean My Wounds" spawned a radio hit. The UK's Kerrang! magazine described Deliverence as a true 90s classic.

Track listing

1. "Heaven's Not Overflowing" - 5:02
2. "Albatross" - 5:20
3. "Clean My Wounds" - 3:32
4. "Without Wings" - 1:54
5. "Broken Man" - 4:54
6. "Señor Limpio" - 3:53
7. "Mano de Mono" - 1:35
8. "Seven Days" - 4:56
9. "#2121313" - 1:02
10. "My Grain" - 3:19
11. "Deliverance" - 4:23
12. "Shake like You" - 4:19
13. "Shelter" - 3:25
14. "Pearls before Swine" - 6:45

Surrounded by Silence by Prefuse 73

The best way to classify Prefuse would probably be glitch-hop/trip-hop. I used to be pretty big into indie/underground hip-hop a few years ago, and Prefuse 73 was probably one of the most unique artists I came across. This album mixes very well with psychedelics. I personally did not appreciate how truely talented this guy is until I gave his albums a shot while in the psychedelic realm. Very textural, ever changing, glitchy, but just right. Truely awesome stuff.

The album One Word Extinguisher is also very very good.

And this is a picture of Scott Herren, aka Prefuse 73.

Band:  into another
Album:  Seemless
Year Produced:  1995

CD Cover art:

Band Picture:

Track List:
1. Mutate Me
2. Locksmiths & Lawyers
3. T.A.I.L.  <================= :thumbup:
4. Getting Nowhere

5. Seemless
6. Actual Size
7. For A Wounded Wren
8. After Birth
9. Regarding Earthlings
10. May I
11. Way Down, The

The bolded songs are the ones that stick out on this CD for me, and "T.A.I.L." is one that I like the best out of the lot....
Not saying that the others are not good songs, just a wide variety of flavors here, and I prefer the more aggressive aspect of their style....
This is their third CD of three, the first release being self titled....
The second release titled "Ignaurus" I have, but nothing stuck out enough for me to recall as being "spectacularly memorable"....

I don't know how to really classify the "style" - maybe rock/hard rock/alternative rock...?  I hate to put a "tag" on it....  :ohwell:
Technically, it isn't difficult to pick up on guitar if you play, there might be one guitar solo on the whole CD....
There are just nice nice melodic guitar hooks that layer nicely with the vocal melodies and the type of voice the singer has....

Dream Theater is by far my favorite band, but I think that this album/CD is less known/less mainstream -
and is why I chose it for the PhanTomCat "pick only one" recommendation....

"Rejoicing in the Hands" by Devendra Banhart.

This is one of my all-time favorites. Devendra is one of the artists at the forefront of the Naturalismo movement. It's wonderful psych-folk music. Simple guitar melodies and some of the most interesting lyrics I have ever heard. People who have experience with psychedelics should especially be able to appreciate his music.
