I don't see how anyone could argue against The Doors as a psychedelic rock band

what exactly were their arguements to say they aren't psychedelic rock? have they even heard the doors? sons like the end and people are strange are classics.
i mean "faces come out of the rain when you're strange", enough said.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_doors
Quote:

The band took their name from the title of a book by Aldous Huxley, The Doors of Perception, which was in turn borrowed from a line in The Marriage of Heaven and Hell, a poem by the 18th century artist and poet William Blake: "If the doors of perception were cleansed, every thing would appear to man as it is: infinite".

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Doors_of_Perception
Quote:

The Doors of Perception is a 1954 book by Aldous Huxley detailing his experiences when taking mescaline. This short book is considered to be one of the more profound studies of the effects of mind-expanding drugs and what they teach about how the mind works.

Don't know if they fit the genre you describe but psychedelic is definately an influence.

Yeah, The Doors are definitely psychedelic.

The real issue is:

I don't see how anyone could argue against The Velvet Underground as a psychedelic rock band

When you are talking about a band as singular and revolutionary as the Velvet Underground why would you try to fit them into a genre?

What--you think they were so unique that their too good for a genre? They were unique, but they weren't genreless

Their genre is Rock'n'Roll and a lot of their live stuff is very surrealistic.

And they weren't revolutionary. None of the so-called people who were influenced by The VU are even close to their style.

Definitely psychedelic, but they did become more bluesy on the last two albums - that said Peace Frog's on Morrison Hotel and Riders on the Storm, from their last album, LA Woman, is incredibly trippy.

way waaaaay down in the sound mix is someone whispering "riders on the storm" on and off throughout the whole song - first heard it when tripping a few years ago, very creepy, but in a cool, "oh wow, I never noticed that neat trippy effect before".

Anyone who says they're not psychedelic will be vomitted on by Morrison in the afterlife.

Yes! I mean no one is genre-less...but my point is that a band like the Velvet Underground can't be summed up. They don't really sound like anyone else and no one else really sounds like them, try as they may. Calling them psychedilic or Rock and Roll or, yech, "the original indie band" doesn't bring you anywhere close to their actual sound.

Well yeah we agree. I guess I think that revolutionary means they caught everybody's attention and sparked a generation of failed imitators.

If you heard more early-mid-60s underground Rock'n'Roll, you'd probably take that statement back :cool2:

My guess is that people say that because the are/used to be "too mainstream."

:yesnod: Yup, exactly...... The Doors are trippy, they took psychedelics, were influenced by them.......however, they were from LA, and completely disconnected from the San Fran. psychedelic scene, so that's where the arguement probably comes from.

Personally, I think the Doors are one of the most over-rated bands of the 60s, right after the Beatles. However, you'll never hear me say that they weren't psychedelic, cause they damn sure were.

that's actually Jim whispering the lyrics on that track in the background
I thought it persisted throughout the entire song though
