When I used to work outdoors in tick country I would eat the garlic pills you can get in drug stores. Get the sticky gel caps, and don't get the odorless ones. The stinkier the better. Eat two in the morning, and two before bed starting a day or two before you go picking. I used to give two a day to my dog also, and it kept the ticks completly off her. RR

DEET is a very effective repellent with a pretty impressive safety record of over 60 years. At the concentrations in most preparations (Off for instance), the risk to human health is far less than the risk of contracting a mosquito or tick-borne disease. There have been some rare cases of serious siezure disorders following small amount of DEET exposure, but these extremely rare events happened in individuals who for some reason or another had a real sensitivity to the substance. Like any pesticide, DEET is toxic in large doses, and there is some worry that continuous (long term, daily) exposure may cause some irreversible harm. Again you have to weigh this against the risk of contracting one of the many dozens of mosquito and tick-borne diseases that we have in the US, most of which are very unpleasant, some of which can be fatal.
Things like garlic pills are recommended for any blood sucker, and actually go back to the myth of garlic and vampires. No studies have shown garlic to be effective against tick or mosquito bites, and several studies have demonstrated that they are in fact, ineffective. Remember though, that epidemiological studies are population based. It is impossible to make a judgement about the effect of any particular compound in any particular individual. So I certainly don't doubt Roger Rabbit's positive experience with garlic. But I'd be hesitant to recommend it to the masses.
Of course the best preventative of all is to wear long sleeves, long pants tucked into the socks. And if you are going to use DEET, you can just spray it on your clothes and not really worry about getting on your skin (where it is highly unlikely to harm you anyway). In the woods stay out of tall brush. When you get out of the woods, take a shower and really look over your body for ticks. Remove them carefully with tweezers, grasping as close to the head as possible. Afterwards, wash the bite spot and your hands. Never, ever, ever, use something like a burning match or cigarette to get a tick out. This makes them bite harder and dig deeper. Also, it is extremely rare to leave the tick's head in your skin, despite common urban legend. In addition, most tick-borne diseases require the tick to be attached for around 12-72 hours before it can transmit an organism to you (some can be transmitted in as few as 6 hours). So even if you find them, if you get them out (using the tweezer method only!), soap and water on hands and bite mark, you have virutally nothing to worry about. Any rash at the bite site or fever with headache, joint pain or other symptoms within 10 days or so should warrant a trip to your doctor. Most tickborne infections are rather easily treated when diagnosed early.
Have fun!!

I would say there's something to the garlic approach. I eat heavy amounts of garlic and onion (I love them both), and went hunting through the woods here in northern Middle Tennessee for about four and a half hours (ID still hasn't been confirmed on my finds...) and didn't find one tick on me. My dad and step mother went outside for less than an hour and had two ticks apiece.
Hooray for the special repulsive effects of garlic..(maybe it works on women too...been kinda dry in that department lately too..)

LOL - I think that's a well-proven effect with women! As far as ticks - maybe you are lucky, maybe there is something to it that has been missed in various studies, or maybe you are one of the people where your particular scent plus garlic keeps the buggers away. Again, it's impossible to make judgements from individual cases which is why at a population level, we try to aim for well-designed, large studies, randomized if possible.

My tips for tix. Tuck ur pants into your socks. Wear light colored pants. Use a good spray. When i get home i strip on the porch. Take my cloths to the wash and wash them. Then i take a shower. Lymes disease is no joke. Had it twice but luckily i am on my game. My mom wasn't so lucky. She was in a bed for two years.
