First time mushroom growing and my kit has no instructions

So thats my situation. I was able to find some literature at my local "library" and it was able to get me this far...
I inoculated 8 petri dishes of MEA with gill segments from psilocybe cubensis mushrooms. A fine white mould has grown in small patches forming auras of sorts around the segment pieces. These auras extend only a millimeter or so away from the segment piece. I need to know if I should inoculate my grain a.s.a.p or if I should wait for the mould to grow. A pic of an MEA dish ready for transfer to a grain medium would be very helpful greenaphid@hotmail.com thanks Aphid

It's properly called mycelium if it's going well.
Also, I would wait until it spreads further. Give it some time so that any contaminants present could germinate, this will let you know that that particular dish was toast to begin with. Also, give time for the mycelium to reach out, so you can determine which specimen is desirable for your grain inoculation. I'd say about an inch in radius from the gill fragment is a decent size.

this was a clone like yours...
then do some more transfers... cut a peice of mycelium out... and put it on new dishes.
and let that grow out...
then take a few wedges out and inoculate your grain with it.
grow them out and see what you have.
hopefully the mycelium will be aggressive and the fruits will end up being nice.
if not...start over.

Thanks Zathan and Roadkill for your input. You guys seem to know what your doing so let me pose you another question. The "Library" was actually my father and the literature was his slightly incoherent notes from the 70's so it gets a little foggy surrounding grain inoculation. He notes that he "read somewhere or heard somewhere, or maybe it was a dream" that you can sterilize grain without a pressure cooker by adding water to the grain, then heating the water to a boil in a hot water bath (in a pot of boiling water on the stove). Then you let the tubes cool for a day and heat them to boiling again, then again on a third day. The Idea behind letting the tubes cool for a day is to let contaminants hatch, then re-boiling again to kill the invader. The note also mentions letting the tubes sit for three days to check for pure culture. What do you think? Wise advice or Mumbojumbo from the diary of a wierd hippy? Any counter points? thanks again Aphid

That's fractional sterilization, and from what I've read it fails as often as it succeeds. I'd pony up the dough for a pressure cooker.

This is an inoculated dish 8 days old. Its easy to see a fine white fuzz against the black background
