Casing 101?
    #6851473 - 04/29/07 10:43 PM (16 years, 10 months ago)

If I crumble a couple of BRF cakes into a 4"X6" tupperware bowl using the Casing 101 Tek(verm. on bottom jiffey on top) How do I go about dunking this bowl before put in the FC and after harvests?

dunk the cakes before crumbling, RR says to run water around the edges and allow it to absorb for a few hours then tilt it to drain the excess

Crumbling pf cakes to case them is a waste. You're much better off to dunk the cakes for 24 hours, then roll in verm and place in fruiting conditions. You'll get a harvest of equal size much faster, with less chance of contaminants.

just to let everyone know, i use the casing 101 process to make my casing mix (with added oyster shell flour)

but i heat it in the oven dry, and works perfectly.

Because there seems to be a mindset among new and intermediate growers that cakes are for babies and real men grow bulk. Once egos get put aside, cakes are actually not a bad way to grow at all.

Cakes make excellent spawn to bulk substrates. You can use them to inoculate horse manure, coir, coffee, etc, and substantially increase yields. However, simply breaking up cakes and adding a casing layer that has no food for the mycelium does little good, and runs the risk of destroying all your work to get to that point. I suggest either spawning cakes to a bulk substrate or doing a dunk and roll, but forget about crumble and case.

I'm a noobie, so thought I should stick to the tek. But if I was to go bulk with these cakes any referals to an easy bulk tek using manure? (remember I'm new at this, so nothing to complicated)

I coat the cake as if it were a piece of chicken I was going to fry. After the dunk, wash under the faucet with running cold water, then while soaking wet, drop into a bowl of dry verm and roll the cake around until every surface is coated with as thick a coat as you can get to stick. Then, place in the fruiting chamber and mist lightly several times over the next hour or two to completely soak the verm, making sure you don't get it so wet it washes off, but getting it saturated.

If it's a new package of verm, you could get away with not treating it, but probably to be on the safe side you should. Spreading it on a cookie sheet and sticking in a 350F oven for an hour will make certain there's no mold or bacteria on it. However, there's nothing sterile about FC's so that's probably overkill, but I usually do it unless I'm taking the verm out of a freshly opened bag.

You'll see the full dunk and roll tek on my DVD. It's part of the brf tek section on disk 1.

I could not agree with RR more here, though I have never dunked and roll'd cakes I HAVE tried to case cakes by themselves (what a freakin waste of time) These are a couple cakes I had in a FC by themselves just to get some nice large fruits,

I can't wait to get the dvd RR so I can check out the dunk and roll method to inprove upon things. As the man RR was saying though at the early stages in the game dont let the ego tell you going bulk is the way. Definitly pay some dues to the PF tek as it was created to get your feet in the door so to speak in the mycology world. By all means though do check out some bulk (straw, poo, or any combo thereof.) I recently added a couple PF's to some poo and have only been blown away by the results....

Well I don't know but I got a pretty nice pinset using this method...

I think the potting soil I used had some nutes in it tho.

I imagine he will say stay tuned he will have a link I'm sure, its in the works as we speak final editing I think.  I'm pretty sure he will be as happy for this to be out so he can stop answering questions about the dvd rather than mycology...;)
