I'd like to become a professional poker player
    #6853964 - 04/30/07 01:27 PM (16 years, 11 months ago)

I think that it would be one hell of a time, I wouldnt really want to play just for the money, but for the expierence... Being able to read people, and call their bluffs is a skill that transfers very very well into the real world, and businesses climate...

anyone else have dreams of going to the WSOP?

I did, but now I wanna be a professional bass player. So now I am spending all my time playing the bass rather than playing poker like a I use to.

I play poker for a living, and it isn't just something you can up and do. It requires time and money, which I'm sure you are aware of. How old are you and what do you currently do for a job? You need to have a passion and have dedication for it. Books, friends it all only goes so far. Your experience and ability to see and feel things a certain way is what matters. You have to be a very self assured person.

Not kind of float into the poker world and think it might be fun and useful later in life, so you are going to dabble as a "professional" for a short while. Yes the skills are immensely useful in the real world.Poker is the real world though, just another world. If you are seriously considering it, you might want to make sure it would be more then just a good experience and fun to play in the WSOP. The poker world has become extremely commercialized over the course of a few years. It is a great experience. But to be a true professional it takes more then wanting that experience.

You have to wear glasses at the tournament or have some other kind of eccentricity, I think those guys are hilarious.

well these days all you need to do is win the BIG one and your set for life.

but as a poster above said, its so commercialized now...WSOP has like 15000+ entering the main event...your odds at hitting that are just so so so hard. even cashing in the main event is a big stretch.

on the other hand, playing online has gotten more difficult the past couple of years. if you dont currently have an account that dates back a while, its a bitch to deposit money and everything. not to mention that hands are raked and the games are rigged. but you can still get very rich. i won 3000 in two days playing on BoDog.

Yeah. I used to play all the time on Party Poker before they stopped allowing it with ATM cards. Probably better. I didn't win very often. Those things are rigged, I know it. It's just like Vegas. The longer you play, the more you lose.

I'm guessing the odds of cashing have been fairly stable for a long time. The more people that enter, the more spots they pay out, I'm sure they have some formula. But yeah, WSOP would be low on my list of things to win if I was starting out trying to become a pro and have a chance at surviving.

Pokers fun, I won a lot of money a little while back and it was probably the greatest feeling in my whole life. But it sucks to lose, I just play for fun now, nothing but 20 bucks on the line. Some day I'll play in the WSOP, but it's a long time from now.

My friend has won over 60k from online poker and goes to casinos to "steal" money from idiots that can't play.

Don't make it a profession. People who see it as a profession end up broke and homeless. Always have a job to fall back on if you lose everything. It's not even about reading people all the time but knowing the odds. Just play a thousands of hands and you will memorize the odds and won't have to depend on people's bluffs. However, you will still need to learn patterns of people making idiotic bets out of nowhere. Could be a bluff, could be a purpose, could be stupidity. I'll tell you what though, I've made stupid plays on purpose and won, lol, when I was bored and wanted to quit.

Um, I don't think so.
I guess now they get endorsements and such from places like Full Tilt, but they didn't when poker was big.

People like Gus Hansen are also or were at one time professional backgammon players, but I mean, that's not really much different.

I just started up playing online again. Unfortunately my debit card doesn't work, so I'm stuck to freerolls until my friend has enough money to transfer me some, or until summer comes so I can just give him the cash if he doesn't get any before then.

I would want to become a dealer. They seem like they have it made. They make good ass money and can turn around and spend it on Poker if they want to. Plus, I bet you get really good by learning to be a pro dealer.

Heh, I met a dude who did it for a living on an outward bound, most he had won was like 5gs not sure, but anyways, he seemed like a cool dude, just like many proffesions, perhaps singing, its hard to make a living off some of these things. Online poker, never was a fan, I know all too well how easy it is to rig or have players from india hired for 5 rupees who can see the whole deck, etc. Now WSOP, that's tough shit, the odds are stacked against everyone, but some people gotta make it, right? If you got alot of money, and can risk it, and are that good or "lucky" perhaps give it ago, however, smaller tournaments are probably the best way to start. And watch that movie, um what is it, with leo decaprio, rounders, lol.

I've been a semi-pro player a few times, I guess, just playing to earn some cash when I've been between jobs. I did OK, but I can't say that I really enjoyed it. It was both stressful and tedious at the same time (although I did play live, which is boring as fuck).

I won't say you can't make a living playing poker 'cause there are a lot of people doing it successfully, but I'd recommend against it unless you absolutely love to play. It's one thing to have an 8-hour session because you're having fun and don't want to leave, it's quite another to force yourself to play all day because you need to make rent.

Here's a great poker forum if you're really interested in improving your game - http://www.twoplustwo.com

Some of them write books, started their own websites, etc. They know they can't depend on poker when they lose everything.

As for getting money into accounts. Try new websites and use gift cards from walgreens. Have to be visa or mastercard but they might have stopped that too.

My friend just transferred me the money, so I'm set on the money.

Most of them don't write books or start websites until after they've become something. Otherwise no one would but their shit. So yes, they may have other sources of income but they don't rely on them, it's more like insurance.

My friend just transferred me the money, so I'm set on the money.

Most of them don't write books or start websites until after they've become something. Otherwise no one would but their shit. So yes, they may have other sources of income but they don't rely on them, it's more like insurance.

That's the idea. A lot of people just think that all they need is to play poker for life as a career and nothing else. Then they lose all their money and have no way of making any more money.
