    #6846163 - 04/28/07 05:55 PM (16 years, 11 months ago)

Any method as to best clean/sterilize some used Quart jars. Jars, lids, sealing ring, etc. Whats the best way to get them clean for reuse? Thanks in advance...

I put mine through the dishwasher with my other dirty dishes.

Dishwasher.

Failing that, hand-wash well.

Sorry, were you looking for some deep, dark secret?

I suggest washing them once after you've birthed/junked the product, then once more before you use them again. A nice isopropyl spray-down followed by a rinse never hurt either.

Im under the impression that if pressure cooked correctly the jars don't have to be perfectly clean before sterelizing in the PC,

They don't. I just really like spraying things with alcohol. I'm probably going to get isopropyl poisoning someday. I used it to clean my floor once! (Not OCD, swear.)

Anyway, alcohol helps dissolve anything that might be stuck-on sometimes, too... can't hurt, right?

Soap and water, then I put them up on a shelf until next use. At that time, I don't even rinse them out. After putting the grains in, they get PC'd anyway. There's enough work in this hobby already without doing stuff that is unnecessary.

But we all need to be constantly, paranoically vigilant!

I swear to god, I never thought I'd go OCD, but this hobby has started me rolling down that hill.

I hear piss works well as a cleaner and sanitizer as well. Just take them out to the back, and take a nice, long wiz on them. Let them bake under the sun preferably for a few hours. If left under the sun long enough you can skip the entire pressure cooking procedure!:sun:

1. hand wash them well, in the sink.
2. dry
3. wet paper towel with rubbing alcohol, rub all jars.
4. let dry.

I usually get my jars like this right before adding the WBS.

i think he means pressure cooking with substrate in the jars, which you can't skip that process. Otherwise you get contams. No need to PC to clean, add substrate and re-PC.
