Check out the new setup!!! (Pics)
    #6836934 - 04/26/07 01:32 PM (17 years, 8 months ago)

OK, so this is my first terrarium ever. I know its pretty small (will fit about 2-3 cakes), but only 2 of my cakes survived, so it works out.

I took this Sterlite container and cut bottom off of the top shelf, to give the cakes more room. Then I drilled about 100 holes in the middle drawer, then I filled the bottom with wet perlite. The best part is I can put the entire thing in a locked drawer if I need to.

I am so freaking excited about this, and I would LOVE to hear some feedback! Does anyone see any problems or have any suggestions?

I agree, cut out the top and put plexi glass or saran wrap, something clear to let light come in better. Other wise your fruits will all grow slanted towards the front where it is clear. But looks great. That is some big ass perlite! Keep up the good work.

Yeah, I thought of using these too. But you should do trays, not cakes, since you're so cramped for space. You can actually get a good grow going if you do that, if personal-use levels are all you're shooting for.

Crumble your cakes up in a bag into dime-sized pieces, and lay them out in some kind of clean container over some wet verm. Cover with more wet verm and let it colonize four or five days... then fruit (or use a real casing mix, or go casing-free, all up to you). Your first flush will produce a solid dry quarter per cake using straight verm, in my experience.

He's growing out of his dorm, bro, and this is his first terrarium. Plus, even if it's impractical... it's purdy!

Awesome! Thanks for all the suggestions and compliments. SpekOner was right, for FAE, I just plan on opening it up and fanning it out. Also, Figgus was right about the dorm, so thats why I'm going small scale. I think I'll grab something clear for the top, and next time I'm defiantly going to do a casing. If anyone does decide to try this with a bigger bin, post some pics! Half the reason I'm a member here is for the interesting setups people come up with!

Kinda high so bare with me...

Ok...if you did use this type of setup, would this particular setup help with contamination issues?
like if you layered each drawer with tyvek or polyfill and have a ton of holes in the bottom of each one?

But also,
You could have the bottom drawer be a fan...blowing up...and have holes in the top of the whole thing to take care of your FAE...and since its going to be locked up it wouldnt create a lot of noise. You could even add some dynomate (the stuff you use for cars to keep shit from rattling) to the whole inside of that thing

...and you could even setup a safety switch to turn the fan off if you needed too.

Just a thought

You have to keep in mind that this setup is really small, only about 10x10x10 inches. You'd need a bigger bin if you wanted to put cakes/trays on different shelves. The fan would probably be a good idea for a bigger bin, but I definitely couldn't swing it in my small space. Honestly, I'm not sure if it would help with contams. This is my first grow but from what I hear contams aren't a huge deal after your done colonizing the cake.

Also, a lot of people were commenting on my large rocks of perlite, could that be hurting my humidity?

Yeah i was thinking maybe a small CPU type of fan would be enough..who knows though.

Do you have a meter?
