New to Growing with Rye (Ecuador Grow Log)
    #6651118 - 03/08/07 10:32 PM (17 years, 10 months ago)

No real questions here, I'm just going to post the results of a growing session for the first time on Rye. Any helpful comments would be greatly appreciated:

AFOAF used to grow using a generic Brown Rice Flour Tek, and took a two year hiatus.

Now, it's time to get back into the groove of things, but this time the grow medium is going to be Rye Berries to produce greater results. The only spores remaining from two years ago were in a spore syringe made from a print of a previous grow. There was some skepticism on whether the two year old spores would actually still be viable.

Injected four sterilized quart jars with 2.5 cc each of spores. Placed the jars in an incubation chamber, which was created using two rubbermaid storage bins, the bottom filled with water and containing an aquarium heater. The temperature is currently set to 84F.
The spores came through and gave me some Mycelia after 6 days in the chamber. (some crude pictures below)

Once the jars colonize, they will then be cased using 60/40 vermiculate/coir mix.
Humidifying will be accomplished using the following humidifier, and check humidity with a cheap hygrometer from Target. The humidifier will be on a wall outlet timer to provide appropriate humidity (humidifer below)

The chamber is a Martha Stewart Closet with some shelves made from chicken wire and zip ties(shown below)

The chamber will be kept at about 78 - 80F once the casing is prepared, and the humidity will be kept at 92 - 94%.

MisterMisty will be used for additional moisture.

Some details I have not yet ironed out are air exchange and lighting. I will probably just buy a powerful light to lay on top of the closet, and fan out the chamber a couple times a day. Any suggestions on better ideas are welcome

I will report more as the growing continues.

(Thanks to Magash for his detailed explanation of this type of setup)

Careful lol. They might tell you it's mold. Cause they have never seen colonizing like that in as little as 6 days. SWIM had a jar look like that after 3 days. but the jar was shaken 2 times in 2 days. Then let sit for 24 hours. actually, the jar SWIM had looked like that 5 days after inoculation. Mycelium showed up 2 days after inoculation. which is why i say 3 days. 3 days from signs of Mycelium, then the jar was shaken 2 times over 2 days. on the third day Mycelium was all over the jar. about 40% colonized.

Yours is looking awsome! IMO at least. Good work with the Martha Set up! best way to do it from what SWIM has read and told me. SWIM say's that RYE is definately the way to go.

Keep us updated!

The first sentence in the first paragraph is just a joke for those who know what i'm talking about. Cheer up guys!

Good luck to you. I'd recommend getting the foil off the jars though. It's important to keep the filters dry, and the foil can encourage condensation that gets them wet.

Simply cutting slits or holes in the greenhouse should take care of FAE for you. If that's a wicking type humidifier, it probably won't keep up. I can't tell from the pic if it's that or an ultrasonic. most of us are using impeller type cool mists now, as they work very well. Once again, good luck on the grow!

My jars have been injected over 14 days ago, and they seem to have stopped colonizing. There are bare patches in the jar, and no mycelial growth for the past 4-5 days. Any reason that they would not completely colonize the rye grain? thanks for the help, pictures below

I cant tell from the pics but when they don't colonize completely it is usually a moisture problem or bacteria

I there anything I can do to correct this problem this far along in the growing?
Or should I go ahead and try to put them out to fruit?

What are you going to do with them, are you spawning them to something else or just going to try fruiting straight grain

Do not include the uncolonized parts, take what ever that you can that is healthy and use that and throw the rest away good luck:thumbup:

Sounds like a good idea... thanks

I'm fruiting the grain with coir/vermiculite

I have 4 jars so I will probably consolidate them and make 2 trays instead of 4.
Appreciate the help

Read this http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php?Cat=0&Board=64&Number=6004845&fpart=1&PHPSESSID= if you do this I am sure you will be allot happier with your results then you would with just casing your grains:rockon:

OK, I spawned the jars to coir, and used a mix of coir and verm with Hi Yield Hydrated Lime to case it after about 10 days. I made a total of four trays.
Two trays grew a little, but it was a very small crop. The two other trays just gave me aborts. I used a cool mist humidifier running 24/7, and it has kept the humidity 85 - 90%. I also have been using a misty mate to spray it a couple times a day. The temperature is about 75 - 78F. I am not sure why I got such a terrible yield.
Oh, and I am lighting the trays 12 hours per day.
There is some white on the surface, possibly overlay? any suggestions?

I'm pretty sure Blut' was right about the bacteria.

When you went to fruit the coir did it smell sweet / acrid?

If bacterial bloom set in that would be the most likely reason.

That...or bad genetics.
