Pearl oysters and lion's manes grown on rye, spawn to....

i'm starting up my first grow right now. i'm going to be growing Pearl oysters and Lion's Manes. For both i will be starting in wide mouth quart jars (the tops are still tapered slightly) with rye grain. I'm wondering if it's possible to just fruit straight from the rye grain, and if so how would i transfer it from the jar to the fruiting chamber. I would also like to spawn it to a larger substrate for fruiting, but don't know which would be the best method to go about doing this, seeing as both of these species like growing out sideways... which would be the best method for spawning it to a larger substrate?

Both like hardwood sawdust, and both can be fruited out of jars, but performance is better with a larger substrate. Oysters do very well on straw as well. You can use quart jars to pressure cook some sawdust, and then when the grain jars are fully colonized, spawn them into the sterilized sawdust and fruit out of the jar as in the first picture below. The second picture is a laundery basket with several quarts of oyster spawn mixed into about 1/10th of a bale of pasteurized straw. The third one is Lion's mane on a sawdust/woodchip block that was sterilized and grown in filter patch bags. You can also grow oysters and lion's mane on newspaper or old phone books the way this reishi is growing. RR

i can get large amounts of sawdust for free from the woodshop at my school. They have huge bins full of it. It's mostly alder, but there m ight be some other woods mixed in. i'll go in and ask what it's composed of. So i could just use the rye grain as spawn masters to transfer to sterilized sawdust. It seems like doing it out of the jar would make for a lot of unexposed mycelium, so low numbers of fruits...do oysters and lions manes work in casings? i'm going to use at least one to spawn to saw dust so i can inoculate some logs for the yard and a garden project i'm working on.

hahaha, how would i go about sterilizing some newspapers or phone books? those are some awesome pics. i loved your fruiting from money pics as well....I think i might try to spawn to sawdust. Your rye tek seems to be working pretty nicely, RR, just got my first signs of life today...got any suggestions for best method to spawn my colonized rye to sawdust?

Just pour it in. If you supplemented the sawdust with wheat bran, it needs to be kept sterile, so you'll need a flowhood or glovebox. RR

are you saying i don't need to sterilize if i'm using just the sawdust? and what do you mean "just put it in" should i put sawdust in a jar with spawn and mix the 2? should i try to do it like a casing? or just do it in a jar still? I've also met a person who has a chicken coop. lots of straw with chicken poo mixed into can be easily acquired if this is at all a good growing medium.... Any way you could link me to a tek, or something o the like? your rye grain prep tek seemed to work perfectly so far, i'm showing great signs of life in all of my jars, there's none that don't have nice whispy white mycelium growing, and none look contamed so far...
i'm totally going to experiment with spawning to a book/bible or some newspapers...any way to sterilize thse things? or should i just keep them in a bag while colonizing and hope for the best? would i need to soak the book or newspaper first for water content? and, Silllo, whats up with that little picture? It's like a little kids cartoon version of Come to Daddy, the Aphex music video...hehehe j/k
edit: RR, just release those videos of yours so i can buy one, and i won't have to ask you any more questions...hehehe. j/k, thanks for the help, and keep up the good work. you've got some truly inspiring pictures inside your picture gallery.

Check the edibles forum. All my woodchip/sawdust and straw procedures have been posted there. RR
