    #6833562 - 04/25/07 05:33 PM (17 years, 8 months ago)

I'm anxious to start my first project. I have everything expect the rye, I'm debating on trying WBS. Should I try the WBS or just order Rye online and wait almost a week? thanks guys

While WBS is a little easier to get the appropriate moisture content, Rye is by far superior for fruiting. WBS is best used for spawning to another substrate. If you can get your hands on some rye, go for it.

well i defineately don't want to waste 4-6weeks. I suppose doing it right would be the best idea. I'll probably have 2wait for the rye mail order in that case. I'll wait for more responses b4 i order.

You could start 1 qt wbs, and order some rye. Then do a grain transfer to the rye and colonize that very quickly. You'd probably need to make a glovebox, though.

Do you have any health food stores around? They usually sell many grains in bulk bins....

i have never used rye, but am currently using white millet, a main component in WBS, and so far I am very happy with my results. I have 4 quart-sized jars that are near 100% colonized in 2.5 weeks (using a LC). There are no signs of contams and the water content was right on! Pick up some WBS!

Use the WBS. Soak and/or simmer it to desired moisture, fill container 2/3 full, PC the be-jabbers out of it. Following day innoc.

And thats a fact! Understand WBS is seed with a shell/husk making nutes less available rye on the other hand is an open grain where nutes are readily available there is no comparison!

If you're just spawning to a bulk substrate like horse poo or coir, you can even use popcorn. It really doesn't matter in that case.

But if you want to straight case and fruit whats in your jars, as said above, go with rye.
