Quick Dunking Question
#6830214 - 04/25/07 12:12 AM (17 years, 8 months ago) |
|
|
My first grow... I noticed my cakes were starting to turn a little bit blue in the FC. Since I didn't dunk them at birth, I figured they were dehydrated so I decided to conduct a little experiment. I dunked one of the cakes for 8 hours, and when I took it back out it was waaay more blue than when I put it in. Will it recover stronger than ever *crosses fingers* or did I screw up?

You should dunk for 24 hours. It's still dry. They'll bruise from being handled, but don't worry about it. Roll in dry verm after the dunk, then once it's back in the FC, mist well a few times to hydrate the dry verm. That serves as a casing layer over the whole cake. RR

No.

If it's from a brand new bag, no. If the bag has been open and exposed to the normal mold sporeload in your house, then it's always a good idea to bake it on a cookie sheet in the oven for an hour or so before using. I've done it with and without successfully, but baking the dry verm is so easy, it's not a good step to skip. RR

i would guess that 212F would work, but I have heard people say 350F. I would go with 350 if I were you just to make sure... not much can live above boiling except archaebacteria which probably aren't chillin in your house, unless you live in a hot spring or something like that.
Also I could be totally wrong... it's been years since freshman biology.

So, I went to check on my cakes today planning to dunk the rest of them for 24 hours this time, and the cake i dunked last night for 8 hours is still completely blue, very much more so than the rest. Now i'm reluctant to dunk the rest, thinking I may ruin them. Should it still be blue like that? It's out of control amounts of blue.
