ph raising substitutes.
    #6829407 - 04/24/07 09:16 PM (17 years, 8 months ago)

I can't find hydrated lime in any garden nursery!
Does Home Depot carry it?

Tell me what substitues I may use.
Can I use sticks of blackboard chalk?:p
Crushed up egg shells?
Also, Petco got calcium carbonate reptile sand. Anyone ever used this?

The most important concern of all, if I can find a substitute to raise the ph of my casing layer, would I use it in the same ratio/manner as hydrated lime as recommended by RR?
(1 tsp Hydrated Lime, 5% Gypsum, 1 cup peat)

It mentioned that he got contam after. I also couldn't find any of your MGMC Blut. I checked some of the larger garden centers. Do they have them at Home depot?

Of course if HomeDepot has a good ph raising product, I'll be experimenting with that first.

Also, there was a thread of someone using a "Bullseye 7.0" liquid product in a bottle for aquariums. He experienced a nice flush BUT hydrated lime was sill added into the mix.

You can order hydrated garden lime from best hardware stores from their website. www.doitbest.com When you get there, type in hydrated lime in their site search engine. Oyster shell flour also works, and there's been many links posted to sources. Use the 'search posts' feature at the top of the page to get your answers.

I think you may have heard wrong, most of the mushrooms I have grown I have used MGMC as the casing layer and I love it.I am sure there is a more optimal mix out there but for ease of use nothing beats taking something ready made out of a bag, pasteurizing it and having it ready to use

Blut, from your other thread, didn't you mix in some additive to raise the ph of your MGMC casing?
