Does cotton work instead of polyester?

Does cotton work for the vents on the tops of the jars/sides of the fc, or does it really need to be polyester pillow fluff?

I heard cotton works but it's organic so you have to keep it absolutely dry or contams will easily breed there. Just buy a bag of polyfil, a huge bag is like $3. Or you can get tyvek for free from the post office. The priority mail envelopes are made of tyvek.

Cotton is organic.
If it gets damp, it will wick contaminates into a jar.
It will also colonize.

Use polyfill.

I used to use polyfill, tried tyvek once and will NEVER go back to polyfill on jar lids,my personal opinion of polyfill is its messy and unreliable(Pack it too tight it doesn't allow enough exchange, too loose and it will fly out when you shake completely defeating the whole point of a contamination filter in the 1st place)I say save the polyfill for mono/double tubs as that is really the only place it does a better job than tyvek.

OK now to just answer the question without being opinionated, use polyfill over cotton, cotton will wick contamination into the jars even if you do get it to actually stay where it belongs:smirk:

If you're asking because you don't know where to easily find polyester...

Usually you can find bags of polyester in the aquarium/fish supply section of your local pet shop or department store like Wal-Mart that sells pet supplies. It can also be found in the fabrics section of department stores if you ask for it. No need to locate the right cheap pillow.

wtf? polyfil in the fish area? department stores have fabric sections? those are both news to me...
go to any arts and crafts store - HobbyLobby, Michael's, etc - they'll have it for stuffing teddy bears and pillows.
