Im trying to explain to a friend that they are phototropic. but do they use photosynthesis? I'm thinking not

the moon in autumn,
a cool breeze in summer,
snow in winter.
If your mind isn't clouded by unnecessary things,
this is the best season of your life."

No, plants use photosynthesis... shrooms only need a tiny bit of light to induce pinning and let them know which way is up.

I have noticed that the more light i give it with the other variables within range, i get a lot more pins.

In nature, when mycelium reaches the surface of the ground, it is exposed to 3 things
1 - fresh air 2 - light 3 - cooler temperatures
These three things combined let it know that it has reached an exposed area. Hormones are then released throughout the mycelial network that tell that area to make fruits/sex organs which grow up towards the light and deposit spores to further propagate the species.
That is the one and only thing mushrooms need light for. They do not use photosynthesis in any way.

Light duration as well as intensity does indeed have a direct relationship to pin count.
