adding lime and gypsum to spawn
    #6826847 - 04/24/07 10:18 AM (17 years, 8 months ago)

I read a thread last night about getting all the parameters for adding lime and gypsum to your casing layer. but should you also add this to your spawn (coir, manure, etc.) if soo what should the ratio be? I also caught a couple of times about adding spent coffee grounds or worm casings. would you add this also to both the casing layer and spawn and how much and what is the purpose of adding the coffee and worm casings? thanks for all your help guys

'Spawn' is your grains, and you can add a pinch of gypsum between your thumb and forefinger to each jar, or add a tablespoon to each few gallons of soak water that you soak the grains in to hydrate them.

Add gypsum to your coir and manure substrates, but lime is usually optional because they're not generally exposed to contaminants except during colonization, and they've already been pasteurized just prior to that.

Lime is for casing layers that are exposed to the natural contaminants in the air for extended times. We don't lime for the mushroom mycelium, because it actually prefers acid conditions. We lime for the contaminants because they are less tolerant of a high pH than mushroom mycelium is.

"spawn is your grains"

my next batch of brf jars i want to spawn to coir (so this would be spawn right? so im not confused cus u said it was my grains) how much gypsum wuld i add if im spawning crumbled cakes to a bulk substrate. im not doin grains yet i want to get my feet wet with casing some cakes first.

and the lime and gypsum levels you gave last night would that work also for crumbled cakes.
"1 tsp of lime per cup of peat"
"1/2 to 1 cup gypsum per 10 cups of peat"

thanks

Yes, that's the right amounts to use. Corrrect also that when you use brf cakes to spawn to bulk substrates, the brf cake is the spawn.

Roger, is gypsum/peat/verm alone a good casing?
I can't find hydrated lime that is not dolomitic around here.

 I've been doing this lately, and I've noticed how much less of a stink the soak water creates.

Also, what are some substitutes for lime?
-types of Oyster shell/flour?

And what rule of thumbs are there in adding those to the 50/50 casing mix?
