Soggy Substrate
    #6825435 - 04/23/07 11:01 PM (17 years, 8 months ago)

I'm a first time grower, and was sterilizing 6 jars in a supposed pressure cooker (it was actually just a heavy pot with a lock-on lid, but it's old, from the 1940s). My first batch, I put in too much water, and the bottom 3 jars were completely soaked, the substrate ruined, not to mention one of them cracking. My second batch, the bottom 3 looked okay, but the brown rice flour grains were a bit bigger than normal, like they had absorbed some water. I put some tin foil on them too, but it seems some water got in. Is this okay? I won't be using the jars for at least two weeks, so maybe they'll dry out by then? Or should I scrap the jars and the substrate and make sure that the water doesn't even touch the jars when sterilizing?

Also, if I don't use them for a long time, should I re-sterilize them?

Sorry, forgot to mention that. PF Tek, and I bought long grain brown rice and grinded it up myself.

My substrate was a little bit too moist and I inoculated it anyways. The collonisation was a little slower but meh, still seems to be working out.
