Vermiculite deception
    #6825231 - 04/23/07 10:14 PM (17 years, 8 months ago)

Here's the story:

I had made a small Vermiculite jar from the Vermiculite Tech about two months back and took an interest in Rye. I let the Vermiculite Jar incubate for a LONG time, due to the fact that it grew so slowly, but it was thick, so I thought nothing of it. (we kinda noticed a dry spot on the bottom of all the jars, but by then there was nothing we could do.)

My companion and I birthed two cakes about four weeks ago, give or take three days. Two weeks after the birth, one completely died, nothing growing (it was the doggier of the two) so we plucked it out and left the other cake. We had the air exchange going, although the hose did fall into the perlite on the bottom, but we fixed it as soon as we found it.

It remained mostly the same, moisture was fine... it seemed relatively unchanged until the last three days. The once white cake completely turned brown and seemingly died. There's been no contamination that we could tell... so I'm not understand why it died.

(this unfortunately isn't the first time it has done this... What am I overlooking!?)

No we used it... we followed the Vermiculite tech and it was growing decently well, and even when we birthed the cake it looked fine.

Suddenly, it just up and turned brown on us...

Sorry, I've never heard of 'vermiculite tek', so you'll have to explain. Vermiculite is great, and is used in dozens of teks.

Alright, the PF tech.
(Derrekito is the buddy I'm doing this with.)

Anyway, Derrek, can you find the PF tech and post it here, that may clear up some problems. Thanks.

It sounds like it dried out. What hose? You'll need to give a bit more information on what you have going there. The best setup for pf cakes is simply to fill the bottom of a tub three to five inches deep with rinsed and well drained perlite. The perlite will provide near 100% humidity.

There's a chance your cake got moldy too. You'll need to post a picture and we'll take a look.
