Company is replacing my Desktop...

So I've been given the go-ahead to research laptops in order to replace my desktop at work. The criteria: Cost-effective (in other words: cheap), 17" screen (I told the purchaser that this would come at a premium and that’s ok), 1 GB RAM optimally, 700$ - 900$.
What I've found so far is a Toshiba Satellite P100 w/ Core Duo T2050 1.6 GHz Centrino, 1 GB RAM, 80 GB HD, 17" Screen - this for $832. This seems to be just fine for what I'll be doing, a little cheaper would be better tho. Oh, and I'll be leaning towards Win XP preloaded (need I say why?).
I've been a Mac person my whole life so I don't really know what to look for, and this is where the main question is. I spoke to the guy @ Bestbuy and he told me to avoid Acer and E-machines, and lean towards HP or Toshiba. Anyone concur? Why or why not?
Can anyone help out? What other brands should I be looking at? Anybody have or is familiar with the above machine?
Thanks!

If you're getting a laptop, Toshiba seems to have emerged as the gold standard. Fujitsu and HP/Compaq come in at a notable second place with Sony VAIOs skulking around nearby.
Honestly, if you're buying a Toshiba, just go online and check that the model you're getting isn't one of their few lemons then just get it.

My gf has a really cool Toshiba M40. (about 2 yrs old)
Not sure what the prices in stores are, but here's one on ebay for $600.
Ours has a 1.8ghz Pentium M 512 ram (just recently ploped another 512 in there) 80g HDD Nvidia 6600 GO 128mb
It's a really nice laptop. The only problem i had was having to download intel's own wireless software, since the one it came with and the windows version sucked and wouldnt work. It's really great, can even handle some gaming (doom3/hl2/WoW) pretty well, especialy with the 1g ram.
Here's the watered down version: http://cgi.ebay.ca/Toshiba-M40-JM3-Centrino-1-6Ghz-512MB-60GB-Nvidia-6600_W0QQitemZ130101502717QQihZ003QQcategoryZ140085QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Hi everyone, thanks for the replies! For now I think I'll stick with the Toshiba and see how it goes - I should find out today if go or no go. We're a small company, so I'm trying to find something that'll perform in the long run for us. I'm pretty stoked, I've never had anyone just up and offer to buy me a computer!
