low cost grow!
    #6821494 - 04/23/07 12:14 AM (17 years, 8 months ago)

Ok i am doing a low cost grow that is about as simple as you can get.
I am using birdseed and mason jars with some TC and Tasmanian spores. I didnt use a PC just boiled 3 times and put in jars. Waited for them to cool then took lid off mason jar and squirted half a spore syringe on 4 mason jars. Waiting for about 20 days now and nothing has happened yet and still am waiting. Do you think this will work or is it just going to get contaminated?

Start OVER. You are waiting in vain.
Either do PF tek, or get a PC for grains.

20 days? Not even a contamination? Start over using the PF tek.

What supply's do you need for a PF-Tek? I dont have a PC or incubator and my jars are at room temp so that could be why its taking so long. I would like to see some shrooms in at least a month or two.

I would get a pc and make a tub in tub...then go with perlite and a fish tank to grow them thangs...or if u want dunk, break, case and use a martha...plenty of good teks just look around.

If you had to take your lids off...then that means there is no holes in your jar lids. NO gas exchange can occur.

The reason that they spores have not germinated is probably because the water content of the birdseed is not optimal.

Like these guys say...get a PC if you want to work with grains.

OR

Stick with the PF-tek.

EDIT: ...and make sure you read a LOT more before you try again.
It will save you a lot of stress in the long run.

I took apart the tub in tub.

Used the tubs for storage of other things.

Now I have a submersible aquarium heater for trade.

Any questions?

for incubation you want them at 80 degrees roughly and for fruiting around 70. it is pretty important. my first batch of cakes i had no way of monitoring temp so they were at room which was anywhere from 60-65 at the time they were colonizing very slow. i got a heater in there and maintained it arund 80 and they took off.

what about light when the actual shrooms are growing? do they NEED light to grow, or is it just so they grow upwards/faster? I don't have a fluorescent lamp. should i buy one?

12on/12off is the best light cycle that ive read about so far and its what im doin. no they dont need it to grow but yes it is used as a basic means of direction to grow in. and yes use a fluorescent on that says it immatates daylight.

They only need a small amount of light to initiate pinning, along with full colonization, and fresh air exchange.

Once they are fruiting they grow towards the light.

Regarding temperature: it is NOT crucial to have your jars incubating at 80oF

I keep mine in a box (around 70oF)
Some people just let them colonize right out on a shelf.

From LC...some rye jars are fully colonized within 14 days with the others not far behind.

JohnnyBoy, please, stop spreading disinformation.
