Traffic stop tests drug dog
Woodland Police Officer Rich Rails and his K9 Uran were sent to Witmer-Tyson's California Narcotics Detection course in Newark, Ca. for training this past March.

The school, which ran for four weeks, trained the team in narcotics search and detection tactics. Uran can detect trace amounts of anything from marijuana to heroin.

Rails and Uran are the only K9 team to have received the training in Woodland.

At 2 a.m. on Saturday, the training paid off.

Woodland Police Officer Chris Lara initiated a traffic stop after spotting a vehicle making a high-speed turn onto Oak Avenue.

Upon running the license plate, Lara received information that the vehicle had been recently stolen from the Davis area.

As Lara approached the vehicle, he recognized the driver, 34-year-old Woodland resident Russell Johnson, as being on parole for vehicular theft. Johnson was immediately taken into custody.

Rails and Uran were sent to cover the stop. Rails had Uran perform a search on the vehicle and he immediately hit on the driver's side floorboard.

A black pouch containing ecstasy, crystal meth and marijuana as well as several syringes was found.

Johnson was booked into Yolo County Jail on multiple charges including vehicular theft, parole violation and several drug possesion charges.
