There really isn't anything you can substitute for vermiculite in the pf tek. If you already have a pressure cooker you're much better off just using rye to begin with.

with verm being taken of the shelves at major/ conveinent retailers i wasted more gas than needed for a $5 bag of verm, so first off call around first, and make sure they have it. i went to 3 places after they said they has it in stock to find out they dont carry it. after that i would sugest pestering a friend or by bike. shipping will cost just as much as the prices asked online. depending where you live check Craigslist, that sites a god send for great deals on everyting in your area.

Thanks for the compliment, but I only gave advice that I gained from your signature.  This must be the completion of some sort of devine mycological loop.

Seriously extreme - get rye, use your perlite for humidity & use your flour for bread.  Verm would still be good for casing, but there are other [less ideal] options.  Worst case, order it online like dude said.

Nonsense. Vermiculite is an excellent moisture reservoir, that holds more water for its size than anything else. Any substrate, including sawdust/woodchips or manure can benefit from the addition of vermiculite. There is also no other method of growing that can grow more mushrooms on less substrate than pf cakes. That's a fact.

You don't find any of the old timers trashing pf tek. It's not about ego, it's about more than one way to skin a cat. Pf cakes have the highest BE of any growing method, bar none.

Don't replace verm with potting soil. They're apples and oranges.

I get my vermiculite from Autozone. Because it is very pourus, people use it for their car garages to absorb oil that drips on the ground. It goes by the name "Realistic Ash Bed".

I suppose I should have said I have grown allot more with out verm than I ever HAVE grown with it instead of ever COULD have grown with it,I know allot of people do use verm with good and sometimes great results,The only time I ever had verm help me out was when I used it to correct the moisture content in a cracked corn grow I did a while back and seeing as I live where verm must be ordered online it seems to me to have not been worth the trouble,as said above different strokes for different folks,if you like verm use it I just wanted to voice my experience with it cause there are allot of people in my boat too where couldn't get it without ordering it even if their life depended on it and I would hate for them to think it was necessary and get discouraged

Good luck to all regardless of their methods:thumbup:
