Substrate: ratio inquiry
    #6815850 - 04/21/07 12:21 PM (17 years, 8 months ago)

I'll be spawning six jars of WBS, colonized with B+, to some pasteurized material at some point during the next two days.
The materials I have on hand for this purpose are:

1. coir (pasteurized)
2. vermiculite
3. coffee grounds (pastuerized)
4. worm castings (will pasteurize in oven)

Question: what ratio of the above substances should I use to spawn the WBS ... then which of these materials should I use as a casing, once the base layer is showing myc growth?

Dear Bandog,

I just used 80% coir with 20% coffee grounds (with a little hydrated lime) with very good results. No experience with worm castings .... I guess you could add them in with the coffee/coir. Then spawn, one part spawn to four parts substrate .... or could do more spawn ...depends on how far you want to stretch your 6 jars. .... For casing, I would get some peat moss to go with the vermiculite and do a 50/50 or 50/50+ casing. That tek is archived under casings.

Those proportions have worked for me.

Good luck.

Rico

hey Rico - thanks for the input!

I'll be attempting to spawn two pint jars to each of three clear plastic containers, with a bottom area of approximately 14" x 8"

I'll keep each container inside a green garbage bad until ready to apply the casing. After that, I'll keep only the bottom and lower sides concealed within the bag. That's my plan, anyway

Dear Bandog,

Sounds like a plan, MAN!

You might consider lining your trays with aluminum foil ... to guard against side pinning as the substrate and casing shrink away from the tray sides.

I am currently doing 4 trays (similar to yours) in 2 fruiting chambers, WBS spawned to coffee/coir. At the same time I am doing 4 seperate monotubs, WBS spawned to coffee/coir (2 tubs) and WBS spawned to horsepoo (2 tubs). Casing is 50/50+ in all.

I have experience ... over 10 to 15 years ago with the orig. pf tek .. BRF cakes in fruiting chambers .... it has been neat to find this site and learn about all the new proceedures and try some of them out.

Anyway .... I am no expert .... sounds like you are doing what I am doing a step or two behind me. Good luck. Let us know how it goes.

Rico

Bandog,

Dude, one other thought ..... I covered my trays with aluminum foil with holes punched and covered with 'gentle paper' tape. This was really convenient ... could move them around ... from the table to the shelf, etc. With your trays in a garage bag, you may loose some mobility.

Good luck,

Rico

Rico - THANKS!! I had forgotten about the tin foil trick! You just saved me a lot of hassle (trying to keep the garbage bags pinned/taped up against the lower sides of the containers ... huge pain in the ass)
I've experimentally grown in trays twice recently, after using the PF tek with great success.
In each case, I was thwarted by overlay, so I'm hoping that I have all my ducks in a row and all my techniques and advice from the wiser mycologists here straight.
My challenge has been judging the precisely correct time to move from incubation to fruiting environment ...

Just for the hell of it ... can you explain the purpose of the coffee grounds?
I'm adding them because 1. I have them, and 2. so many people recommend them - I'd still prefer to understand exactly why I'm doing various things ...

Dear Bandog,

Nutrients ! Food ! Nitrogen N !

When I pick mine up from a local coffee house they all nod and say, " .. gardening project, right? ..."

I read somewhere on this site about the various gardening uses for coffee .... can't remember where.

Also ... there was some talk about what caffene does ... I have no idea about that.

Look up the "Coffee / Coir I hate you!" posts .... I really liked those.
