Prolific Growth - Time Line
    #6815204 - 04/21/07 08:47 AM (17 years, 8 months ago)

I was just going to post this small time line to show how quickly these things grow. I myself am personally amazed at the speed of these things.

Being a first-time experimenter, I just can't get over their ability to nearly double in size in a 24 hour time span.

So here is the 4 day time line:

-Day 1 - Pinning-

-Day 2 - Growth -

-Day 3 - Growth -

-Day 4 - Growth -

-Supplies Used-

  • Substrate - WBS, BRF, Verm, and Tap Water.

  • Casing layer - 50/50 Jiffy-Mix, Verm, Tap Water.

  • 72-78 Degrees - 75-90% RH.

  • Light - 12/12 - x2 18" Fluorescent Solar Bulbs

  • Standard FAE w/ Light Mist directly to casing and fruit.

Questions ?:
  • Does everything seem to look correct?
  • Should I fill the sides with moist casing soon?
  • Any comments, questions, or suggestions are very much welcome.

"I'll update the time line every few days."

Have a great weekend everybody!!

Looks great! It does seem to have pulled away from the sides of the container a tad...I would maybe just let this flush go and after the harvest, I would dunk the case.

Thanks for the INPUT Myndreach.

Alright so after the first flush to re-case and dunk you basically:

  • 1. Remove any loose top casing layer pieces.
  • 2. Lightly run the faucet on the sides of the Un-Cased substrate layer.
  • 3. Drain.
  • 4. Add a new pasteurized moistened casing layer.
  • 5. Cover with foil and incubate it for a few days.
  • 6. Then move it back to the FC.

Someone let me know if this is the correct way to dunk a small casing please.

Later

I've got another question:

  • In nature how deep down does the mycelium structure go into the ground / natural substrate?
  • If your substrate depth is shallow and your casing is small in size will the fruits be smaller as well?

Thanks Everybody

1. I am assuming as deep as the substrate goes. Myc will travel as far into a substrate provided there is ample moisture and nutrition. So it varies.

2. Most of the time, yes. But moisture content is probably the most important factor.

TO number 1, it depends. Mycelial networks have been found that were thousands of square miles in size, making mushrooms the largest organism on the planet. Remember, the mycelium is the actual organism...the mushrooms are simply it's sex organs.

So I've read a bit on Mushroom Reproduction and what I found is very interesting to me.

I had not previously known that the spores created by the mushrooms are actually consistent of Male and Female genetics and that they actually form bonds to create the Hook'n'Loop mycelium structure.

Before I had previously thought that the spores just needed heat and an opportunity of nutrients resulting in the infestation of a substrate like a bacteria but this is not so.

I'm now aware that we are working with an actual living breathing cross between an Animal and a Plant.

I've read multiple reports and this one is pretty interesting to think about:

Quote:

http://amos.indiana.edu/library/scripts/fungiwhat.html

Yael: Have I got a question for you, Don. What are fungi, plants or animals?

Don: I'm on to you. You want me to doubt my own common sense and pick the stranger of the two choices. But I'm no fool, Yael. Anyone with any sense at all knows that fungi are plants. I mean, mushrooms grow in soil for Pete's sake, and they certainly don't move about like animals do.

Y: You seem to be forgetting that mushrooms are merely one of many types of fungi. Not all fungi grow in soil. But you're right that mushrooms and other fungi do resemble plants in many ways, so much so that scientists long classified fungi plants, but they know better now. Where it truly counts, fungi differ from plants significantly.

D: Such as?

Y: One major difference lies in how they eat. Plants are characterized by their ability to make their own food, using chlorophyll, sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide. Fungi cannot make their own food. They have to consume other living or once living organisms.

D: Hey, that sounds a lot like animals. But surely fungi aren't animals, are they?

Y: You're right there. Fungi aren't animals either, but for what it's worth, some scientists consider them more akin to animals than plants. It's even thought that fungi and animals may share a similar single-celled ancestor.

D: No way.

Y: Yes way. A major defining difference between the two kingdoms, however, is that while fungi do indeed have to consume other material, they don't have stomachs like animals. Fungi have special cells that allow them to absorb their food.

D: Well, I guess you got me again.

Any thoughts?

So today I've come to the conclusion that the tiny loaf pans I'm using just aren't deep enough to feed and support any large fruits.

Or possibly my substrate and casing layer may have dried out to the point to stall growth.

But it seems that the fruits already well established are growing fine.
As the picture time line shows there is growth but not much considering the 2 biggest fruits are 3 inches tall with the veils breaking as we speak.

Quick Picture Update:
Day 5

So I've poured a 1/2 inch of water down the sides of the casing tray and it sucked it up like instantly.
Added another 1/2 inch of water and swished it around the bottom and sides and poured the excess that would not soak up, down the sink.

Also misted the top casing layer as best I could without drenching the fruits.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
A lot of trial and error with this hobby.
Also different locations will have different weather and conditions that will have to figured into the equation.

Should I wait a day or two then harvest and recase?

Substrate depth should be 3 to 4 in's. However strain type would be the deciding factor in fruit size. just need to find a strain that has big fruits.

Looks like your headed in the right direction.

If you can get a copy of "The Mushroom Cultivator". This book helped me a lot.
