Hello everyone. I am currently using the Quart Jar - Revisited method and my jars are in their mycelial growth period. The method says that I should leave the jar caps on very loose. I was wonderin if this is a good idea. Should I tighten the jar caps or leave them on very loose.
Thanks

I would leave them on tight. This will not allow any contams to enter. You should have a layer of verm on top or filter discs(or both together mo betta) for added protection.

DAMN! The method doesn't say anything about that. The meth. says that the mycelium needs air to grow so I should leave them on loose. What should I do? ??

To tell you the truth I dont think it really makes that much difference either way there are pro's and con's to each method. For example: if you are NOT using filter disks it would make sense to keep those rings loose to allow as much air exchange as possible. Mycelium only needs CO2 in the beginning germination stage I believe and if your using filter disks then it doesnt really help to keep those rings loose since your gonna get all the air exchange you need. Hope this helped...

the key piece of info here is quart jar. in that big a jar, you MUST introduce gas exchange. hence the loose lid or filter disc. if you have live growing mycelium on the top of the jar, you needn't worry too much about airborne contamns.
vermiculite sprayed with 9 to 1 hydrogen peroxide solution on top of your jar contents will effectivly block them from taking over.
