So I am pretty new to this hobby. So things that make a big difference are a big thing to me. So what I have done is to remove the tape over my inocaulation sites and then I covered my tops with a coffee filters( I also have a dry verm cap). It has made a huge difference. Like night and day! So all you newbies (like me ) do not be afraid to expose you myc to air. It hads not cause contamination but it will help more than you can guess. Do it!! FAE!!!

colonizing jars do not need fresh air. all they need is GAS exchange, which can be done wih micropore tape with no problems. perhaps since u had a verm layer and tape though, u did not have gas exchange.

fresh air exchange is something u wont want until you go to induce pinning.

Exactly. The purpose of FAE is to lower CO2 levels to help induce fruiting. The purpose of gas exchange is to provide oxygen and H2O to the mycelium. Only a slight amount of diffusion is enough for this. For FAE on the other hand you need much more ventilation, so some sort of mechanical fanning is usually needed.

If you have a top layer of verm on your cakes, you don't need any tape or anything else. Let the verm layer do its job.

So, aside from the top verm. layer, what else should one have on the jars? What you said could be very confusing for the extreme newbies. It could sound like one doesn't need a lid or anything aside from that top layer.

yoy still need the lid with your 4 holes in it that u used to noc it up. but if you have the top verm layer you dont need anything on the holes. just put them away in a dark place at 80 degrees for a few weeks and bingo bango wait for mycelium to take over.
