that I thought some of you might be able to help me with.
I posted this message in the regular mushroom cultivation area, but I did not get many replies. Maybe some of you more advanced growers can give me some input.
I have been an occasional grower of magic mushrooms over the past couple of years, because I like to trip every once in a while. Through my own experimentation, I have developed my own personal shroom growing system that I find to be quite effective. I will now give a description of what I do to grow shrooms.
I use organic brown rice flour, vermiculite, and distilled water for my substrate. I put the substrate into jars covered by a top layer of vermiculite. I then pressure cook the jars, let them cool down, and shoot spores in the jars.
I fill a pan full of vermiculite and put it in the oven at 350 degrees for at least twelve hours. I take sphagnum peat moss-based potting soil (I like Schultz Potting Soil Plus which is readily available at Wal-mart) and put it in the oven at the same temperature and for the same time as the vermiculite. This oven cooking sterilizes both the vermiculite and the potting soil(which I use for my casing).
After the jars are colonized, I take 16 oz. Picnic cups and put a layer of wet sterilized vermiculite on the bottom. I then take a colonized jar and cut up the colonized cake of mycelium into marble sized pieces for my middle layer. Next, I put wet casing (the sterilized potting soil) on the top.
I put a bunch of these cups into a big plastic container with a clear plastic cover on the top. I keep the temperature between 75 and 85 degrees. Every day I air out the container and spray the sides of the container with a water/hydrogen peroxide mix. Within a couple of weeks, I get a good harvest followed by a second and sometimes a third flush. I hardly ever get contamination, my cakes just seem to get worn out and stop producing. I then pick my shrooms, rip them in half and put them under a fan. In one day they are dry and I put them into the freezer in a sealed bag.
To anybody experienced in growing shrooms, this is obviously a very simple and accepted way to grow. Everybody started out with a tek that was somewhere along these lines. I have just done away with some of the unnecessary things, such as a layer of wet perlite in the bottom of the plastic container. Or some fancy drying container with dessicant at the bottom.
However, I am interested to see if any of you have any suggestions that might increase my yield or potency. I should stress that I am a grower who is not interested in learning the finer points or knowledge of growing. I do not want to fill my head with pointless scientific crap. I do not want to experiment with time consuming growing processes. I am not dissing all of you brainy shroom growers who are inquisitive and like to experiment. But, I do not care about making some complicated substrate that will make my cakes colonize two days faster. I do not want to do time consuming and complicated lab work in order to produce some freaky chemical that will cause a 5% increase in potency. I just want to know the most cost effective, easiest, and fastest way to get decent yields of potent mushrooms. If anybody has any tips or hints that are not too burdensome or boring, please write back.
