True Newb Has some questions...

This is my first post on this site and it concerns my first batch ever... after doing lots of research i foolishly decided to use the easiest method i could find. I'm using quart-jars, and the way they are shaped it is impossible to take the cakes out of the jars, so I have no choice but to leave them where they are (unless i broke the jars i guess.) I have seven jars that look like they're actually doing what they're supposed to. Two of these jars ( I just noticed today) had excess water so that when I tilted the jar, i could see the water move around in the jar a little bit, so i drained those. These two cakes have some extra-fluffy mycelia growing on them and I was hoping it wasn't cobweb. The water I poured out smelled a little funny, but not rancid as I would have expected an infection to smell like. Also, one other jar seems to have a tiny amount of a rust-colored stain near the corner... I don't know what this is either. Also, several of them have what looks sort of like roots growing through them and around the sides, and these same root-looking structures growing upward like spikes. Is this good? I put them into the fruiting chamber about 4 days ago and there's no pinning so far, but they've been fully colonized for almost 2 weeks now so I'm a little discouraged.
I'll post pictures once i figure out how to and I find my camera.

i forgot to mention that i'm using brown rice as a substrate... probably not the best choice either. I'm really just hoping to get one good mushroom out of these so i can harvest the spores and try again

i know i know... the label said widemouth, and not being a mason jar efficionado i believed it. I'm so ashamed....
also the guy who wrote the guide i used never mentioned birthing his cakes so i didn't think it was that important at the time. now i've changed my mind lol.

I am a new grower also , and what i can tell you is this:
I also mistakingly bought tapered jars, so i crack the jars, and peeled away the glass (dont break in risk of smashing cake.. ofcourse).. next time get widemouth.
The 'roots' are normal.. so i hear.

You did "lots of research" but you still:
used qt. jars they were not tapered excessive water
I would do some more research. Give them a while to begin pinning. It will take a week, I'm sure. I hope you dunked and rolled. Good luck, and spend the $30 to get a couple more syringes. If you are having trouble like this, you are not ready to take on new tasks such as spore printing.

well, like i said... I picked the easiest way I could find. So i knew about all the other, better ways but chose the easiest since I'm growing them at my girlfriend's appartment and I didn't want to take up too much space or have to drive over here several times a day... also, like I said, now that this method isn't working out so great i'll not take the easy way out again.

Next time use this BRF mix:
2 parts verm 1 part BRF 1 part h2o
If its at your girlfriend's, you may want to use damp perlite in a fc with plenty of holes drilled on all 6 sides (FAE). Very easy to do and you won't be yelling at your lady for not fanning.
Good Luck.

thank you so much. i'm guessing that fc stands for foam cooler and FAE is something air-exchange. anyways i get the idea. thanks for your help and also thanks for not scolding me for being "such a newb"
