How Much FAE does a Cool Mist Provide, Thin Stems... Why The Fuck?
    #6813383 - 04/20/07 03:35 PM (17 years, 8 months ago)

Hey guys, I have been reading for the last few days to try and figure this out but I just cannot find a "straight" answer that is to my liking. Here is what is going on:

I am running a closet space similar to scatmanrav's. Approximately 29sq feet large (4.8 X 2.41 X 2ft) or (58 X 29 X 22in). I have a Kaz Cool mist running 24/7 and a sonic mist running every 4-6 minutes for 1 minute. RH is always above 80, usually around 90-95%. Temp is always between 72-77degrees usually at 74-75 range. 40W Cool Flouro Light running on 12/12. Cased WBS And Coir w/ 50/50+ , appox 3" sub and 1" casing. Its possible the casing mix is ever so slightly sweet at ~ 8 or so.

It would seem that everything is perfect, so I do not understand what is going on. First there was a bit of a long fruiting time, approx 1 week maybe 1.5 and then when the fruits finally came up to be harvested they were TINY, thin stems, decent height, 2-5 inches all of them, most in the 2-3 range. What the hell is going on. The cool mist will fill a polyurethane vons bag in ~8-10 seconds. Assuming a vons bag is about 1sq foot, that is about 12 full exchanges an hour (right?) Anyone have a definitive # on how much airflow does a cool mist provide CFM wise?

The bottom of the closet is venting properly, no CO2 buildup is occurring at casing level for sure and I have 3/4" pipes w/ holes drilled into them distributing FAE and Mist evenly. I think its FAE but everyone is saying they are running Martha's w/ 1 cool mist only?! How can that be, every variable in my set up seems perfect and FAE seems the be the only thing people say other than substrate depth that determines stem size. HELP MEH PLZ!

Question: So other than substrate depth and FAE are there any other factors that attribute to the stem size?

I'm not an expert, but you might need to run that ultrasonic more frequently. You should make sure the humidity never drops below 90%.

RH is 90 now, turning up the frequency now to see where it will stabilize.

also, substrate may be an issue. Anything other than poo might not do as well.

I know somebody who's having the same problem. Almost the same setup too (only temperature is mid-60s, and casing layer is MGMC). FC is manually fanned 2 or 3 times a day.

I was thinking that maybe it was lack of water content in the tray (tray was not dunked before being put in the FC), or inconsistent water delivery to the casing layer.

I remember reading from one of the vets that with a cased tray RH isn't that crucial as long as it's above 80%, and also that temperature isn't that big of a deal either (as long as it's above 60).

A constant rate of evaporation from the casing layer is one of the big fruiting triggers, so I would think that variable RH isn't much of a big deal and might even help (again, as long as it stays above 80%) - can anybody conclusively prove me wrong on that?

Also, apparently initiation of pinning takes a lot of water, so consistent delivery is also important.

Any vets out there care to chime in as to whether any of the above might cause the described symptoms?

Peace
:sun:

I think that upping the droplet size in the sonic mister will help a little bit with keeping the top of it moist and etc. It's still under half. I looked at them again and upon closer inspection I think the casing layer is a little dry. I pulled the ripe mushys and spritzed the casings to glistening, hopefully flush 2 will be better.

It's not a humidity/air exchange problem. Size of fruits is related to moisture content in the substrate. Insufficient air exchange will cause long, twisted stems and very tiny caps. Low humidty will cause cracked caps. You just need to either mist the casing layer more, or pour some water around the edges of the tray to hydrate the substrate. After this flush, give it a good dunk.

Thanks a lot RR, I hadn't seen this explaination anywhere yet so that helps a lot, the fruits were tall with decent to large size caps for the size of the stipe and they were not twisted at all. I think that the coir tends to dry out a bit during the initial colonization as I would find a couple of OZ of it condensed under the lid of the trays I was using every time I checked to see if they were done. (2 or 3 times near the end of colonization). I think I will dunk these once the first flush is done for which I think is today. Hopefully Flush 2 will be ownage.
