bacterial contam??
    #681281 - 06/16/02 02:47 AM (21 years, 3 months ago)

I have a jar that almost stopped colonizing.
the uncolonized substrate looked wet, but it didn't smell bad.
a couple of days later the uncolonized substrate loosened from the myc., so I opened the jar and removed it.
Now it has almost recovered, should I just toss the jar, or should I keep it?
can bacterial contams be dangerous?

Bacterial contams are typically a lot more dangerous then mold/fungus type contams. I believe the reason is because they are more likely to be transfered into your mushroom fruits. Don't quote me on that because I don't know for sure. These should definitely be gotten rid of and you should never attempt to grow these out.

One thing you do need to decide is if the "wet spot" looks slimy or oily or JUST WET. Mycelium has difficulty colonizing overly wet substrate and often won't colonize it at all until it has dried up some. Of course it is also difficult for mycelium to colonize areas infected with bacteria too.

You just need to decide if it really only looks wet of if you think it could be something more.

Karen
