San Francisco identifiation please

This was found in grass and soil in San Francisco. The color of the spores is visible on the cross-section - perhaps a dull brown or purple brown? (identifying the color is proving to be a problem!). There was a bulb at the base and a weak annulus. Not much smell. The index card pictured in the cross-section is 12.5 cm. long.

It could be Agrocybe praecox. The cracked top and appearance late in the season is common for this species.

It could be a. praecox. But look at the praecox specimen I found in the Sacramento area about 1.5 mos. ago. The gills on it look much closer. Perhaps the gills on this recent specimen have sagged and spread with age and/or dessication?

It certainly looks to be something similar to A. praecox. David Arora refers to these as the "A. praecox group", which is a good hint that there are a bunch of very similar mushrooms that will probably be split into several species whenever one of the professionals gets around to doing a detailed study of them. It's also a good hint that, although similar to each other, there is also quite a bit of variability in the mushrooms that key out under that name.
Happy mushrooming!

Yeah... we've found large patches of a. praecox in the past months as well. This one was all by itself, though. I actually found a large patch of about five hundred praecox and had an opportunity to watch them for a few days and was impressed by the variation in appearance. Apparently, I didn't take that lesson to heart.
Thanks for your thoughts.
