My friend who has never grown shrooms thinks he's got this fantastic idea:

Fill a casserole dish with brf + verm, cover with verm, cover with tinfoil, stick it in the oven for a while, innoculate, wait for a few weeks and reap the fruits.

Please tell him why it won't work.

In addition to what VKK said, an oven will COMPLETELY dry out your friend's casserole concoction. There will be no moisture, and hence no pretty little goomers. Aluminum foil reflects/radiates heat like crazy ( ever notice that you can stick your little bean burrito in the oven wrapped in foil, and 15 minutes later grab it out with your hand???...the burrito is nice and toasty, but the foil is much much cooler to the touch)

Also, if for some reason there was any moisture left, I see huge problems with contamination. While that verm casserole is colonizing, there is no way in hell that a piece of foil over the top will keep out airborne contams. No reaping of fruits, only bountiful molds and nasty shit you don't want to be around.

If I were your friend, and using brf and verm, I'd stick to something like the MMGG and just case colonized cakes that have been crumbled (a casserole dish would work fairly well for that too)...

Not a good idea. Dry heat (inside an oven) takes much longer and demands a lot more moisture inorder to sterilize correctly. The only adaptation to mushroomer cultivation would be to sterilize dung!
