Cow manure as casing...

Just wondering if it's OK to use pure manure gathered from a field??? Everything I'm reading seems to conflict...I just want to use some dry cow patties, crumbled and pasteurized to put under and directly on top of my colonized popcorn...Is this possible or do I need to mix the manure with something???

That's not casing. That's spawning to bulk.
The manure will colonize 100%--you can't use substrate as a pure casing because it will be overlaid completely and fail to retain any moisture.
Now, if you do that--which is fine--make sure you case too, with a potting mix and verm, or similar.

Thanks...I guess I got my signals crossed when I was reading outdoor teks that said that straight poop over colonized crumbled cakes led to a great flush...
Is there something I might have on hand that I can use to make a casing mixture from cow manure???

you are confused!~
Casing is a process of applying a non-nutritious layer over the colonized substrate so that the mycelium has access to more moisture, thereby increasing the size and number of flushes.
Cow manure is nutritious...and is a bulk substrate. Cow manure is not used in a casing layer.
here is some casing teks for you to read...

and I really like RR's casing tek...

Well...It's fairly easy to get confused when you read this thread...Granted, it's an outdoor patch of PESA's, but the fact remains...The dude used straight horse poop...So it's not exactly ridiculous to think that the same would hold true for cow manure...

Not to sound like an idiot here, but can you, or anyone, explain why h-poop and inoculated grain works outside without a casing layer, but cow manure requires one inside???
